Suzuki Truck V6: Replace timing tensioner -Part 2 of 5

Suzuki Truck V6: Replace timing tensioner -Part 2 of 5

In this 5-Part video series I replace the rattling #1 TIMING CHAIN TENSION ADJUSTER on my 2002 Suzuki XL-7 V6.

Part 2 covers:
-Removal of drive belts and accessories
-Removal of timing cover

This procedure applies to these Suzuki trucks with V6 engines:
’01-’06 Suzuki XL-7 H27 2.7L V6
’99-’06 Suzuki Grand Vitara H25 2.5L V6

Symptoms are a rattling from the front of the engine, especially on initial cold start and at hot idle.

NOTE:
The quoted labor time for this job is 14.5 HOURS, longer than replacing both head gaskets on a Subaru! Here I take some common-sense shortcuts to cut the labor time down to 6 hours or so.

There is nothing too complicated about the procedure…just nuts and bolts. However, attention to detail is critical. These are INTERFERENCE engines. If the timing chain jumps during tensioner replacement, resetting the timing is NOT a straight-forward procedure!
Also all the metal covers are sealed by RTV so proper application is crucial for avoiding oil leaks in the future.

Enjoy!

Thank you for the video series!!!!! Used it as a guide to replace my water pump on my 2000 Grand Vitara. Easy to follow and spot on.

Fitzroy Reid says:

can the timing chain jam the engine so it can't start?

ftnrbhmwk says:

what sized sockets did you use for the alternator tension bolt and the pully bolts to loen both serpentine belts? Thank You

i have a lil tapping noise when my oil was low, could that be the same problem u had here or is it possible its something a lil less troublesome?

Marc Parker says:

Can you replace timing chains and sprockets with the short cut disassembly or are there additional parts that need to be removed? If you replace the timing chains is it necessary to replace sprockets?

Jeremy B. says:

So it's a metric chevy v6???

Athena Keener says:

How did you loosen the fan bolts? I sprayed mine with PB Blaster and used a 12mm wrench and the bolts just start to round without budging. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Ryan Keener says:

How do you get the fan bolts loose to remove the fan? When I attempt to loosen them they start to round. I have tried spraying them with PB Blaster. Any help would be appreciated!

I had the same problem with my 2000 Honda Automatic getting the harmonic balancer off what I done (bit unorthodox) I made sure that Piston 2 was at TDC to ensure that the valves was closed I thin put the piston to the bottom of it's stroke and put rope in the spark plug hole. As I say it's a bit unorthodox but it worked! It's thanks to +Donyboy73 for that trick on a small engine.

Agustin Cesar says:

Just started doing some oil leak sealing on a 2nd gen GV, and GOD… why do they have to put everything so complicated?, in the 1st gen as I see in the video even the fuel lines are easy reach. But the 2nd gen… do you want hell? get the 2nd gen GV… What I would do is get all the electronics from the 2nd gen and install them on the 1st gen, lots of space to work and the nuts and bolts from the intake manifold runners are easier reach 🙁 … your videos are quite a help for me. Thanks.

Great video series! what make/model is that red air ratchet your using?

David Myers says:

Why a suzuki you're a A1 mechanic just wondering.

vinnymac01ss says:

What are the names of that adapter from your air ratchet to your hose so you're not bending your line thanks!

Nice series… we have a customer with one of these. Will have to bookmark this series for future reference!

Nice job so far, Ivan. I think the how to instructions are written by engineers and not mechanics. If there is an easier way mechanics are gonna find it.

BuzzerAuto says:

Ivan why wouldn't you replace the water pump? That is a messy and time consuming job why would you risk doing it again to change the water pump?

jswizzie says:

what kind of compressor do u use

callmeko says:

Thanks for more camera work. With all that Tear Down, You Really should do that Water Pump !

Randy Gudeahn says:

what a huge undertaking. can't wait to see the new tensioner installed.

Joe Shearer says:

Is that trick with the crank bolt something that always works or basically do you need to check engine rotation and if the bolt is ever reverse thread

VGAPR Garage says:

You need a nano impact

Nick Nicu says:

Thanks for the video Ivan. I don't know how the series is going to end,but one potential problem I see is that you might end up with leaking valve covers by going this route. It's awesome to save so much time and I think the manual has you remove too many things, but I think that valve cover is not going to seal the same without a proper cleaning/a new gasket and RTV. Oh,and I would definitely replace the water pump!

Eric Corse says:

I enjoy this type of video with actual wrenching. Its also nice that is is quite. Lets us know how long it actually took after you are finished.

gregp05 says:

swap out the water pump! its 4 bolts and ul save urself the trouble when it leaks

Bill Rimmer says:

Good morning Ivan. The time u spent working around that stiffening brace and intake manifold would have been much better spent just taking it off. Trust. If u don't believe me ask Eric. Those valve cover gaskets r going to b rock like. Some short cuts r wise, maybe leaving the pan on. But others r foolish. Like not replacing the water pump. That Harbor Freight ratchet is slim and long and super sweet. I have one and use it all the time. I think any of the old geezer wrenches like me will tell u the same thing. 66

Awesome to see you using your arms for your auto work instead of just your brain 🙂 LOL
