This screw in type of piston is actually called an actuated caliper. Many foreign vehicles have them in the rear as apposed to a drum parking brake set up. I’ve never had to remove the parking brake cable “hook” to take the caliper off. You’re supposed to screw the piston back in, or you could damage the piston and/or dust boot, as they are both fragile. There are groves in the piston that are supposed to line up with a notch on the rear of the brake pads, as well.

Good video, was able to change the rear brakes. Mine was a 2008 and need to screw the piston back.

Video will not win any sort of cinematographic prizes, but who cares; the information in it was VERY helpful! Thank you!

Any other helpful tips for SX4 owners?

MRwwWestSide says:

This video is very helpful!!!! I was having a hard time trying to get the caliper off, but now I see it’s so simple…… hahahaha Thank you very much!

The “screw in piston” this is new to me and don’t know if the 2007 has one? I think the “screw slot” that you’re referring to is on the face of the piston which is what makes contact with the brake pad?

kenschnauzer says:

How did you get the caliper off, did you remove any bolts after you released the parking brake?

kenschnauzer says:

what type of piston does a 2007 have?

alfass2 says:

Mine is a 2008 SX4 and has a screw in piston

Thanks lastwishflight, missed your comment, screwdriver worked perfect.

Jay Smith says:

Not so with this model..

ssjkyle31 says:

IMPORTANT: If you have a screw piston type rear caliper, you do not use a c clamp or a brake back up piston tool. You only need a large screw drive and turn the piston clockwise.
