Suzuki DR650 Front Fork Removal and Oil Change

Suzuki DR650 Front Fork Removal and Oil Change

I wanted to return the front end of the DR to its factory setting. At the same time it was a good idea to change the fork oil.

No mate you can try carefully running either the film negative or feeler
gauge around the inside of the seal in an attempt to clear any gunk that
might be causing the oil leak. If that dosn’t work then you will need to
replace the seals. Good luck.

I’ve never heard of those tricks. I think I saw one tutorial where the guy
had wrapped saran wrap around the fork tube before putting on the seals. Is
this the same thing?

What is this “Special Tool” you use? The orange one?

n45829 says:

Have you tried the old 35mm film neg or feeler gauge inside the seal trick?
Thanks for commenting.

At 3:54 with your special tool. Why do you do this step? (Damper Rod/Bottom
out spring removal) ??? Is this only in the one side? Do you need to do
this to get access to the primary spring? I am about to install stiffer
springs and am confused by that part.

Well its sort of a special tool. I tapered an old broom handle and forced
it into the internal nut to hold it in place so the bottom alan head could
be turned. I’ve since been told you can use a piece of 25 x 25mm box
section which would be a touch safer!.

Very helpful. My DR650 decided to give me a leaky fork seal on my ride
today, so I’ll be pulling the forks here soon. Very informative, and I love
the homebrew dampener rod tool.

Thanks mate. These vids are really helpful. Cheers

Had to do this in order to return the fork set up to factory setting ie
raise them. To change the springs the damper rod won’t need to be removed.
