Muy buen aporte. Un poco más complicado con la cabina del auto sobre el Chasis. Pero la idea es lo que cuenta.

Hi Toney,
I replaced the sidekick 1.8 old starter with a new starter. However; the new starter makes a scraping noise after engine started. It sounds like the starter pinion gear getting stuck in the fly wheel. Have you ever experience this problem before?

Knight Owl says:

The new replacement starter motor the auto parts store gave me for my 1991 geo tracker automatic has 8 teeth, compared to my original 9 teeth starter I took out. Do you know if they are interchangeable? thanks

Edgar Montes says:

Hey there thanx for the video, mabe you can help me, i removed that bracket to access and remove the starter from the front, but i lost the bolts and dont know witch ones i shoud buy or ask for to get the bracket on again, i am not very experienced in mecanics or bolt terminology, thanks in advance

Knight Owl says:

I have a 1991 geo tracker, and the top bolt for the starter which has the ground wire attached to it is 12 mm, but the bottom nut (not bolt) is 17mm.
But with the bottom stud sticking out about 2 in, will I still be able to remove the starter, without
removing the bracket first? thanks

Jason P says:

Done this on a 96 X90. Similar steps but had some wire harness in the way. Took the battery out made it easier. For back bolt/nut used a 1/4 inch drive 12mm ratchet on bolt side and a 12mm stubby to loosen the nut. Couldn’t bring the starter up so switched them out through the bottom. Still a helpful video. Thanks

Travis Reynolds says:

When putting the new starter on do u have to put the ground wire on the bottom bolt because i just put mine on this evening and didnt pay attention and put it on the top one and it aint cranking at all.

Jarastlad says:

Thanks for the help dude ! I was wondering what I was doing wrong and being able to see where are the damn bolts helped a lot. You really have to work blindfolded. Now my old starter is out. Cheers !

Owen Baughman says:

Thanks for the video! Took under an hour. Be sure to get yourself a ratcheting wrench as he suggests. I struggled for a long time with a regular wrench and was running out of patience. Got myself that wrench and was done in five minutes. My 92 German import sidekick (vitara) with 90K miles on it appreciates it!

Rob Ormiston says:

I just put a new starter in and now it is not starting consistently. I went to the parts store for parts went to leave and it would not start. So I bought a new battery and positive battery terminal( brass even lol) and still no start. I tapped on it and it started. So I bought a new starter and took it to my shop and put the new starter in and it still won't start? It will after a few clicks but wth? Any ideas. I went to the good place to get a real good starter and he said his starter might do the same. I'm going to check all wires again today. I took it back and they tested it in the tracker and said it checked out good even though it took a few times of turning the key for it to start. So kinda stumped??

Ken Hein says:

Tony why won't my starter align with flex plate. I've tried 2 good starters but it won't align. It hits it not going past it or to far away to close 96 sidekick auto

Samuel Garcia says:

Awesome, going to replace my starter tonight, very helpful video 🙂 thank you, saludos amigo de mexico

Mr and Mrs. P says:

Great job Tony. Dale Pitts in San Antonio,Tx.

Mark Owen says:

Thanks, I was pleasantly surprised how easy I was able to get the starter out after watching your video. Not one cuss word and no blood loss. The rotating the part for removal was the key. Other forums were talking about loosening motor mounts and cutting brackets. Much appreciated.

Miguel A Montero says:

Iam looking for aa throter body suzuki sidekick 1.6 1997 or the plastic bolts

Eric Wilsey says:

Thanks, man. I was wondering how I was going to get it out and back in. No bloody knuckles but I think I deserve a beer. 95 Geo Tracker.

Howdie Doodie says:

Uhhh, what did you do with the nut and washer you took off the power cable on the starter? Lol. I am having to do the starter in the yard and I may have a hard time finding the nut and washer in the grass. Just messing with ya, good vid.

capnknuckles says:

First thing you actually need to do: DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!! (for all the newbs)

Robert Theriot says:

hi Tony I have a question hoping you can answer it for me I have an automatic transmission does it make any difference for what starter I buy trying to help my sister out is there a starter for manual and automatic on a geo tracker thanks Tony

warren buchanan says:

i'm sure he's a good mechanic but he should have mentioned to disconnect the battery positive cable from the battery before beginning

Gasper Bell says:

I need an Engine and Body removal video lol

Senator Joseph McCarthy says:

Excellent description. Thanks.

bittersweetiris25 says:

I am pretty sure that my starter is going out.
it starts really sluggish and sometimes when I turn the key it just clicks, I got to keep turning the key and it'll click I'll turn it off I turned on in a click I turn it off and so on and finally it when I turn it on it'll finally start . so I'm going to order a starter and hopefully this video helps me change it lol

You rock! I've never really done any of my own automotive work and this just helped me replaced the starter on my 94 Geo Tracker tonight. You weren't kidding about limited space to work with, but I managed with some time and patience.
