Holden Knutson says:

Oh, man. I had an engine that spun a bearing, and I gave the heads to a friend who worked at Subaru and when I went to pick them up he had used an abrasive pad like that and I blew two headgaskets very quickly (~20 miles).

Lloyd Douglas says:

Good night Mr. Subaru, i am from Jamaica and I have a ej25 sohc and I want the MLS for those heads

Steven Pullin says:

Thanks again for your videos and sharing your talents! Howdy, can you recommend a machine shop to rebuild/ recondition a set of cylinder heads. A lot of the shops around me only want “normal” heads not flat , or the AVCL head. Thanks!

Retro says:

Are the gaskets leaking on the 2022 engines as well?

Pyramid Tank says:

What a great car when you buy used one look forward to having the engine took out$$$ unless you get lucky somehow and the person has the right piece in it.

Roy Niswanger says:

So what years/models used the older graphite coated HG? When did Subaru stop using them and use a superior HG? Thank you.

Fish Man ROLY says:

I wonder which head gaskets the new WRX has?

Big Den says:

Just started a new job at a Subaru dealership as a tech, however I have been working on cars and engines my entire life. Any time I have pulled a cylinder head for any reason, I have always sent it to a machine shop to be disassembled, cleaned, valves and guides checked, resurfaced, and magnafluxed to check for any cracks.

RichH says:

Excellent presentation.
As a onetime 'advanced' Automotive-Mech. engr. and one that HAD blown head gaskets in an '03 Forester ….. Id be VERY suspicious of the head STUDS. If Im correct, these studs are 'stretch' studs similar to the materials that 'yield' (when torqued to the recommend tensions, similar to a torx tool). Such 'stretch-relief studs' are commonly used on engines that are 'robotic computer assembled'.
Has anyone performed an accurate LENGTH measurement of these 'studs' for permanent deformation of their length in a Subby engine that has had significant 'heat soaking and heat cycling' (aka – high mileage, etc.) and THEN actually (mechanics lab) tensile tested the studs for proper 'elasticity' (stress vs. strain) compared to a NEW never used stud???? Even torx devices can lose their tensile properties over time and usage.
HEAT cycling of many ferrous materials 'can' have accumulated apparent strengh and strain properties LOSSES after a long time usage … failry common observation (accumulated loss of tensile properties including submicroscopic yield-'cracking'/embrittlement) in (huge) power-gen applications involving long term 'heat cycling' (similar to other metal stress **endurance** problems……
Rx: possible need for "higher strength" studs that can better withstand the heat cycling and the **strength endurance properties** of the base metal of those STUDS. 'Accurate' mechanics 'should' check to see if Subaru has 'already' accomplished this stud testing – as this problem has been present for now 20 years.

Good explanation

Richard Brown says:

If people can still buy, at a Subaru parts department, the single layer graphite gasket, OR Subaru is still building any boxer engines with that gasket, they are not doing what is necessary to leave the failed head gasket issue in their rearview mirror. I’m considering buying a 2023 Crosstrek Limited with the 2.5 liter engine. I wonder what head gasket it is being built with?

MADagain says:

Do you need to get the block done as well though?

Lee T says:

can i use that head gasket youre showing ending in 770 on a ej253 engine???

Elrond McBong says:

To be fair. The original head gaskets for the natural aspirated Subaru engines totaly suck. You'd think they would put in something decent considering what a pain in the ass it is to change the head gaskets on these cars. But no, they put in the greatest piece of shit gaskets they could find all over Japan. They should give you a cupon for a free head gasket change at your local dealership, if you do the impossible and drive 200'000km without blowing it.

SolamenteVees says:

What is the net compression ratio change after milling the cylinder heads and replacing the head gasket with an MLS type?

D Z says:

Can I send my Suby to you for this repair? I know I'll screw it up somehow if I attempt it myself!

Hillarillz says:

Here because my Subaru blew a gasket…again ☹️

CrabmanSteve says:

I always heard "Do it nice or do it twice" from my momma. Always stuck with me even 25yrs later.

Napalmdog says:

Any thoughts on the head bolts? Should they be replaced as well or is that overkill?

NIV4me says:

can anyone please tell me which multi layer steal turbo gasket will work on my 1997 subaru legacy wagon SOHC 2.2L 2200cc
VIN# 4S3BK435XV6309819 4 Cylinder BODY MODEL – BK7CY3M

John Chafin says:

I have a Tribeca with the 3.0 liter. How often doe the head gasket on that fail? Will the same advice apply for that engine? Curious what the issues are that I need to be aware of for that motor.

DooGee Rugged says:

when i was at GMC the "new improved" way to clean their heads was with ONLY solvent and a plastic razor blade… with that being said there was always a good bit of left over coatings .

luis valadez says:

If you follow the ARP head stud torque sequence your head gaskets will never fail you again. Or just use ARP head studs

Patrick Mercado says:

Any head exchange places anyone here uses ? Sounds almost like it would be a great idea simply to have a complete rebuilt and machined set on hand for anyone working on our 2.5s.
