How to replace the battery in most Subaru keyless entry key fobs! It’s mostly straightforward, but it’s important to use a small flathead screwdriver instead of the key you pull out of the remote.
Typically, the Subaru models with these remote key fobs will check the battery level when you start up and/or shut down the car and alert you to a battery issue. You will want to replace the keyless remote battery soon when you first see that alert so you don’t have to use the trick at the end of this video. Just in case, though, it’s definitely a good trick to know!

Well that was a little nerve wracking!
Thanks! The batteries seem to last long enough that I can never remember how to get back into the fobs. Mucho appreciate!
Yep. Magic. Love this.
CR2032 Thank you for the excellent video straightforward to the point I love it. tip at the end I’ve been using for about a month. It actually works on multiple vehicles not just Subaru.
You are a life saver!! I had a dead battery in my key fob and had to get my other one which took awhile to find……..BRILLIANT. Now I know I can still start the car. Why doesn't the Subaru sales people show you that? Thank you!!
Thank you sir, my fingers bulk had some fear of destruction, but I got it….just take your time and dont force anything..
For reference it's the same battery for your garage door opener..
I also accidentally set off my alarm
Love the alarm part lol. Thx for this info sir!
You omitted the part about needing to press the small silver release button at THE SAME TIME you replace the key in order for the key to easily slip back in place and snap closed. I could NOT slip the key back in without pressing silver button at the same time.
Or just have Subaru do it for you and avoid a mistake that could cost thousands of dollars. Videos like this are what screw people more than help them. This broke my fob because it IS NOT how the new fobs open this is old.
Thank you. Very helpful video!
I absolutely do NOT recommend using the screwdriver method. I've tried both methods. The key that comes with the fob is designed to give you the perfect amount of leverage so that you don't pop the top off too quickly. Using the screwdriver method is too unstable, cause the lid to go flying off as well as the spring inside the fob which got lost. Completely ruining an $80 key fob.
I have a 22 Crosstrek. I always wondered if a message would appear if the battery got low. It turns out it does. Time to replace.
@CarsSimplified i watched 2 videos before this, yours was by far the easiest and best. Ty
what button do you push if battery is dead?
Thank you! Excellent demonstration, and what a great tip!
