Sad Subaru is HAPPY again! (Part 5 – Test Drive & Bonus No A/C Diagnosis)

How will the Subaru perform with new exhaust valves? REV UP YOUR ENGINES!

Also noticed on the test drive that the A/C didn’t work, but customer said “it was working fine” when she brought the car over…hmmmmm.

Hopefully the owner wasent too much of a "Karen" about this, sounds to me like she was trying to get a free AC job. Also everyone who put FRAM oil filters on their engine should not be allowed to own or drive a car.

Jonny Rochester says:

I would get rid of that Trump flag. Looks pretty stupid.

Optik Nurv says:

Your Subaru videos made me sub. Id definitely drive from Pittsburgh just to have peace of mind that my Subie was in good hands.

jo300hn says:

Interesting, only ever use the Blue spec coolant in my Subarus.

Don Kaiser says:

Great series, brilliant workaround to avoid pulling the engine. One question, though… You implied this was a $2K job. Why cut a $50 corner on the TTY Head Bolts, especially on a motor known for blowing Head Gaskets?

jeremy canning says:

Always admired your diagnostics! However with this case study clearly lack of understanding when it comes to lapping valve's, installed new valves yet no new stem seals or shimming them. Appears you need to do research on why torque to yield bolts should be renewed.

fyrbyrd 71 says:

The cause of the burnt exhaust valve? The "brand new front exhaust system" picture is suspect to me. Did the cats plug? Did the exh. system leak excessively? I can see the valve face and seat being attacked by excessive oil burning. But to burn that valve as bad as it was? Hmmm… Just like "the a/c worked when I dropped it off"… The truth, the whole truth, and then the actual truth.

khrwjt says:

I saw rainman ray replace one of those valves about 6 months ago.

Graham Wideman says:

I've never really understood how Subarau and VW engines, with their horizontal cylinders are supposed to last. I always imagine that the pistons are constantly resting on their rings on one side, resulting in a lot of wear on that side. Is their some magic that's supposed to counteract that?

nhzxboi says:

Always the 'happy' ending. I bet that thing will go 5K miles and fault on the same thing as it did before. One day of good driving does not make a good repair. Not good stuff here.

Radio Rescue says:

Great series of videos! Really cool that you were able to do that repair with the engine in the vehicle.

David Englert says:

Great job. I loved these videos. It was very informative and educational. Thanks for the great work.

Arsinoe iv Lost Princess says:

I've seen others replace o rings in that ac fitting. Not a terrible job.

Just watched your series on the Subaru. Good stuff. I just retired from 43 years as a mechanic and the last 13 yrs owning an automotive machine shop in Rochester NY. I have a little Subaru insight that might help. We had the same oil comsumption issue and valve pitting you have. We believe that the valve pitting and possibly the oil control issue is from alcohol fuel. Stick with me here, I have info to change your mind. We assumed the oil burning was bad rings and/or high oil level. The valve pitting we were not sure about. UNTIL ! I had a customer that was a farmer with 5 daughters and 2 sons. All of the girls he put in Subarus. He also had 2 home built aircraft that had Subarus in them. He used non alcohol fuel out of his farm tanks for everything. After 6 engine overhauls and numerous heads for him, we realized aftermarket stainless valves didn't pit. All the valves we found faulty they all were black anodized/plated. We also noticed his motors didn't burn oil. Inspecting other engines showed polished cylinder walls. I think it was caused by low tension rings and alcohol. Some walls were so shiny that you could see a reflection in it. We build our engines with standard tension ring and proper honing and, no oil burn issues again. We were a Total Seal ring dealer so most engines had there rings. They also supplied oil ring that were a little oversized so we could file fit them along with the upper rings. All of this can't be dismissed as shit happens. Again keep up the great videos. I watch them with 2 other old mechanics that total 106 years between us.

Tre Lipscomb says:

I always check a/c, scan for codes and look for existing body damage. Before I touch the car. I also make the Customers verify what i find before i get started on the job. Customers will blame you for anything they can to get something done for free.

Concord says:

Hey Ivan, what car do you drive?

Ripcord says:

I like the fact this car has a millennial anti theft device factory installed. (5-6 speed manual that is)

Robert Accorsini says:

I like your flag

Santer Auto Repair LLC says:

I once did a cab swap on a rusted out Ford F-450 tow truck. Took me 5 days working by myself to swap the cabs and transfer EVERY single component, wire, etc over to the new (bare) cab. Finished it up and the air bag light was on. I couldn't remember if it was prior or not. Well I called the owner of the vehicle and OF COURSE they claimed the light was never on. I diagnosed it as a bad seat belt pretensioner and I was certain it didn't just fail in the 5 days it spent in my shop. I never ask about lights or functions anymore. I also take pics BEFORE repair if the dash is lit up like a Christmas tree! Good work on this one Ivan. I likely would have broomed it after seeing that valve. Kudos to you for tearing into it and fixing it!

The One says:

Tell Eric O is was only 5 parts. Ha!

Mark Rup says:

It worked fine when I left it… haha… famous last words.

Jon Clark says:

Charging A/C by weight and using a scale is the best way to get the correct amount of refrigerant in the system. You can charge by weight using those small cans by using a digital postage scale. I've done it several times and it works great; I even had a shop verify I had the correct amount, using their recovery machine (had a compressor issue right after charging the system and I wanted to get a 2nd opinion).

bigdaddymak1439 says:

Foresters and Crosstreks from that year are known for bad compressors. And that is the sound they make it's not long for this world

Senan Foutchedjev says:

Yes, man. Fantastic job with the engine repair. All of the engine that mechanics open for repair in my area, got worst after the repair and eventually died. Seeing your work I know that success is possible. Thanks.

M.Vehmanen says:

Nice job again.

Annie Renard says:

very very very good videos, thank you
