I have done it both ways dropping the tranny and pulling the motor. In my experience its way easier to drop the tranny, its way less work. If you can get a hold of a transmission jack. To drop the tranny you have to remove both front axles, the exhaust, drive shaft, remove the starter, undo the slave cylinder, undo the clytch fork pivot rod and release the throw out bearing from fork. And finally remove all the bolts holding the transmission bell housing to the motor, remove the transmission supporting mounts, and than pry to separate the motor from the tranny and start lowering the tranny. If you think this is allot, removing the motor is way more. On top of that the motor is hard to pull and install because there is very little clearance.

Best engine removal of all subara I've seen

Marvin Eghan says:

So it easier to remove engine than transmission? Everyone seems to remove engine to do this…

David Randall says:

Great video, thank you.

John Leo says:

Is it not easier to remove the gearbox? I mean all the fuel lines and radiator and complete engine removal seems more difficult that unbolting the rear drive shaft, downpipe , clutch fork and gearbox. Has anyone experience with both methods?

Mark Tomlinson says:

dont think i saw this in the comments but for others, on the wrx the rear intercooler bracket next to the turbocharger has a open hoop to connect the chain to instead of using the intake manifold.
