How to install a cone filter in a Subaru – Dirtcheapdaily : Ep.11

In this episode, I’ll show you how to easily install a cone filter.
This install is similar for a bunch of different makes and models, but today I’ll show you how to do it on an 04 Legacy running the 3 liter H6.

The first thing you want to do before you even buy a filter, is to make sure your stock airbox doesn’t have any sensors or wires running to it. If it does, you should do some research and see if you can successfully run a cone filter on your car.
I’ve put cone filters on all my 1990’s subarus and never had issues. I put them on because I’ve seen significant fuel economy gains and I love how they sound!

Since this is the 6 cylinder, I decided to get the large 11″ filter, but on my other 4cylinder subarus, I’ve always used the standard 6″ with success. I’ve seen lots of people use the smaller 3″ filter, and I’m sure it works great, but it doesn’t appear to have a larger surface area than the stock drop-in filter, so I don’t know if you would see as much of an increase in fuel economy.
Your local auto parts store probably carries these, but amazon has them for the cheapest prices.
