How To: 2020 Subaru Crosstrek – Replace Cabin Air Filter

How To: 2020 Subaru Crosstrek – Replace Cabin Air Filter

I show the steps to replace the cabin air filter in a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek.

✅Please Note:

The Subaru cabin air filter with its “UP” marking with an arrow pointing upward isn’t always present on an aftermarket cabin air filter.

It’s important to get the filter installed so that the air flows through the filter from the top side to the bottom side of the filter. The blower motor is located below the filter and it is pulling air through the filter from the top side of the filter to the bottom side. The “dirty” side of the cabin air filter will be on the top side of this vehicle’s cabin air filter.

If you purchase a non Subaru cabin air filter and it states the airflow is in a particular direction with an arrow for the airflow or just an arrow with no label “UP” or “Airflow”, make sure that points downward. If the filter is marked like the Subaru filter with an arrow and the word “UP” make sure the arrow points in the upward direction.

GREAT video!! Dealership trying to charge $77 for a replacement. Must be $22 part and $55 / hour of labor charge… Thoughts on K&N washable filter??

Master of None says:

You can't assume that it's okay to simply point the arrow up on your new filter because your old cabin air filter had its arrow pointing up.

Air flow is NOT going up. Air flow is down. If you put the filter in with an air flow arrow pointing up then it's upside down.
The ONLY time an arrow on a cabin air filter should point up is if it says "up" next to the arrow (like yours did). But… All horizontally mounted cabin air filters with the blower motor mounted below the filter have downward air flow. Otherwise the blower motor would be full of dirt and debris. If it doesn't say up next to the arrow then the arrow indicates air flow direction and should point down. Another simple way to determine this is noticing how the dirt accumulates on top of the old filter which proves that dirty unfiltered air enters the topside of the filter and flows downward.

Still not sure? Then remove the filter and turn on the blower. Then put your hand where the filter goes. Does it feel like it's blowing upward? Use a piece of string or tissue paper. They will be sucked downward.

Most aftermarket cabin filters have air flow arrows, not "up" arrows.

All the Toyota or Subaru parts that say up on them have nothing to do with air flow. They are simply telling us which side goes up. So if your filter says "up" next to the arrow then of course it should point up.

If it doesn't say anything next to the arrow (like on a WIX branded filter) then by default an arrow on an air filter indicates air flow direction. I've already emailed WIX to confirm this to be true.
