Fixing a Broken Transmission on my Subaru!

In this video, I’ll show you how to fix a broken solenoid on a Subaru with a 4eat transmission. If you’re experiencing issues like a flashing AFT oil light or a check engine light related to the transmission, this solenoid replacement may be the solution you need! Follow along as I walk you through the steps to get your Subaru running smoothly again.

The Forester: Built over a few years the 2004 Subaru Forester XS was built to test the limits of what is capable in an early 2000’s Subaru with bolt-ons. Created for overlanding adventures it takes on the hardest offroad trails while having everything for camping. The Forester features: custom interior, rooftop tent, ARB rack with custom mounts, high clearance bumper, winch, Hella lights, transmission cooler, sway bar delete, offroad coilovers, AT tires, Beadlock wheels, overland kitchen and engine and trans skid plates. And to many people’s surprise often keeping up with full-size 4x4s.

I have been experiencing this exact issue for a few months but ended up just letting my 04 Turbo sit as I didn't even know where to begin with figuring it out. Absolutely perfect timing for this video to be posted. Thank you !

Good Job Chase !!

@TheCreateOutdoors says:

While it was potentially caused by your skidplate, if you didn't have it, I can only imagine the damage from what hit your skidplate would have done to your transmission. I'd say the skidplate did it's job.

Invest in a QuikJak type lift, Chase. You are young and limber, but there are still many benefits to having one.

I had major problems with the 4EAT automatic transmission in my Forester SG Rinspeed Turbo. The transmission got stuck in first gear or first stage. I had the car in four garages, even directly at Subaru. Nobody found the fault. They said the gearbox had to be replaced. It was difficult to find a suitable used one. It was unaffordable new. I was skeptical because the oil pressure was fine. I ordered a valve box in the USA, but it was one from the SH model. A second one I ordered fitted but the solenoid valves were broken. I ordered the solenoid valves in China and had them fitted. Didn't help either. So I had to replace the gearbox. A gearbox ordered in Russia was delivered incorrectly, it was from the Legacy GTB. No return possible. After a long search I found a gearbox in Poland, it fitted but the car still wouldn't shift. After about a year in the workshop, I read one sleepless night that someone from Peru was asking in an American Subaru forum about the kickdown switch because his Forester was no longer shifting. That very night, exactly one year later to the day, I removed the switch above the accelerator pedal and discovered that it had simply got stuck! The switch alone cost €26, fitted by myself. Total cost of one year of gearbox madness €4000! I still thank my wife today that she didn't leave me 😉
