DIY: Subaru CV Boots

DIY: Subaru CV Boots

Torn inner CV boots are very common on 2000MY and up late-model Subaru vehicles.

DO NOT REPLACE THE ENTIRE CV SHAFT WITH A CHEAP AFTERMARKET/REMAN UNIT! Most likely this will cause driveline vibrations, especially when stopped in drive on automatic transmission vehicles.

Here I show how to quickly replace the inner boot without removing the CV shaft from the vehicle. You can save a lot of time, money, and potential driveline problems if you don’t mind getting a little grease on your hands šŸ™‚

Exact problem in 2002, that sweet smell of grease, a different flavor that motor oil šŸ™‚ So if the joint is not making a noise just replace the boot? Save me some money!

Joe Chrystal says:

So what is your advise for when you fry the bearings (left a torn boot on too long)? I guess I don't get the hate on the replacement shafts. I understand not going with super cheap parts, but not all of us have the $350 or so for the replacement factory parts.

MICHAEL DE LEON says:

the front lefthand side axle assembly of my 04 subaru forester immediately turns and makes a grinding noise as soon as iI put the shifter to Drive or Reverse, even when the car is not moving at all. can i get some insights and advice on what the problem could be?

Just wanted to say thank you for this awesome tip!! Saved me so much money

Aaron Mitchell says:

Great video, very clear. Job done in about an hour. Cheers.

Dude, you did a great job editing and shooting this video. So many people can explain how to do this but when they shoot a video they don't bother changing camera angles for visibility, or they don't use enough light, or they fail to edit out unnecessary bits, or even worse, they skip steps. You showed everything, tightly edited and clearly explained. Excellent, outstanding job. Subscribed!

Bradley Marshall says:

Great video. Was just about to do the inner on my 99 wrx by popping the 32mm nut and pulling the lot out. Glad I watched this first! Big time saver!

Daniel Sancho says:

Thnk you very much!! Very clear and well explained, captions are very good, precise. Full thumbs up!
More Subaru Outback videos please!

Just replaced the inner front right CV boot on my 2000 OBW. Thanks very much for this video, it was spot on and saved me a butt-ton of money.

Happy Trails says:

This was a great video. I had somebody help me with it but didn't have to buy a non OEM CV shaft as one of the mechanics wanted and I didn't have to buy a new CV shaft. THank you so much.

thesniperofcs says:

the aftermarket inner joint doesn't have retainer ring to hold the shaft with the cup

the outer joint doesn't come out easily with few hammer knocks, I ended up cutting the joint with angle grinder with cutting disc

Greg Sporton says:

Changed both the boots on my 3.0R yesterday, no way I would have even attempted it without this video so thank you very much. Quick note for 6 cylinder owners, the dual exhaust runs directly under the CV joints so there is very little room to work with. Once I removed the wheel I noticed there is a small plastic guard that is held in with 3 clips, separating the engine bay from the wheel well. I removed the guard and was able to perform 80% of the work from the wheel well which made it much easier.

I've been toying with this for a year and a half (and trying to find late model instruction for DIY ). This seems to clear up a misconception of replacing the whole axle. Will give it a try !

Jason Young says:

Thank you for this video; I'll be tackling this task, probably on Thanksgiving :-/ better than pulling the axles (which I thought I'd have to do) I'll likely disconnect the castle nut & pop the ball joint instead though (that's what I did for my clutch job).

Barrett Lee says:

My boot tore right after I bought my car. Ended up taking it on a road trip through some crazy mud and even through a flooded town. I'm sure it's gotten pretty dirty in there, but if I'm not having any issues with it now, should I expect to start having them if I repair the boot? it's been probably 5k miles since it tore

arciefan says:

One two bbq ! Kinda like spiking the ball after a touchdown. Always good to take a little victory lap. Whipping the job, and not it whipping you. Great job and thanks for the upload !

Mark Hanson says:

Nice work man! Great lighting and dialog. Helping folks save $-worthy!

scott firman says:

Our 2010 has leaking valve covers but scew that, for now they are fine, typical subaru. If the boot is shot, dirt gets in and goes bad. Do it right or go home. I will get the valve covers fixed in the spring and mabe do a head gasket job at the same time, got to remove all the shit to get at it anyways.

MrAceofwands says:

wow you made a meal of that lol. why not undo the outer cv nut extract the outer cv from hub unclip the outer boot tap off the outer cvĀ  slide off the inner boot along the driveshaft replace with new inner boot reassemble. job done. but clean the outer boot rim on the cv as the outer boots are a hard material and can weep grease. and yes mark the leg bolts to the leg as they adjust the camber.
