Here’s a quick how-to on replacing the from struts on my 2005 Legacy GT Limited. The video gives a pretty detailed walk through and covers a couple of nuances with this car. The video applies to the Generation 4 Legacy, which covers years 2005-2009. I used the OEM KYB struts as my replacements, but the process is the same regardless of manufacturer.
You can also use this video if you need to replace a spring or strut mount (often the root of a groaning noise when steering).
Here’s a link for the rear struts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5waOdqCiyM
I like the strong emphasis on safety but I would have gotten more out of it if you had actually showed the disassembly and assembly.
thanks for the video! very well done! i just did this on my 2005 outback. i replaced the mounts too. my mounts would go in in any direction. i tried all three ways, it didn't seem to matter. your're saying yours would only go in one way? thoughts? comments? thanks!
Well done Ted! Craftsman 'shop and tools, attention to safety and detail, patient and thorough. Natural educator. PS-noticed the countersunk Philips on your bench top. Getting things 'right' takes the 'right' amount of time. Grandson of Lombardi!
good tips on the marking, thanks
Gee… Where do you live??? There's no rust on your car! It must be nice working on a car without rust, l'm jealous. Thanks for the video.
I replaced all four of my struts pre watching this and I believe my front right strut makes noise when I turn the steering wheel (makes the noise during slower speeds or when parked)
Great work and explanation. Thank you so much for taking the time and sharing.
This is like the safety video, I love it ,you explain everything with exact details
Replacing all my struts, this was extremely helpful! Thank you!
Thanks for detailed video how to replace struts.
I am in the middle of doing this too. First part seemed very easy. I did seem to struggle with spring compression, since the spring have very few turns. I guess the method you did is the one that works the most.
I did tend to hit the "landmine" in the process, where I realized I have inch hex keys instead of metic allen keys. Looks like I will ahve to hit the store tomorrow. Next time best thing would be to loosen the nut while its still mounted in car body.
Very well explained! Thank you for the video.
Thanks for the tip about picking up a couple sets of compressors. That's the kind of thing you don't want to discover on your own when you're halfway through a project.
