Saturn S-Series Shift Shifter Cable Replacement (Manual Transmission)

Saturn S-Series Shift Shifter Cable Replacement (Manual Transmission)

Replacement of the shift cable on a Manual Transmission 1997 Second Generation Saturn SW2 Station Wagon. SW2 is basically the same as the SL2. I researched this and pulled all the info together in one place plus the techniques I learned and used as I did the replacement. It took about 5+ hours (including video and picture taking).

I have an automatic I'm working on. Your title didn't say "manual shift" or Stickshift so I watched assuming it was an automatic. I watched anyway and it was informative. Thank you.

Replaced the shifter grommet with a plastic one on ebay. Just installed it pretty easy. Works so far.

Seven Potter says:

I also have problems with the shift cable grommet popping off the cable when in going reverse and I'm middle of traffic I can't shift,it's screwed people yelling I have to Rupp the console out and put linkage back in grommet.dammit and also the shifting is hard to go in grsrs like its cables are rusty inside or old cable like on bicycle cables.I was going to put lube into cable jacket.

Chris Loewl says:

so now i have to ask why my main shifter cable is "stuck" in a horizontal position when I see everyone elses ring is vertical? I can twist it far enough to clip it in but I expect the ring should not offer torque because that can't be good for bushing?
