Our government just gave Ukraine over $2.5 billion dollars so surely $7 million could be found to preserve this iconic piece of American history. I bet Elon Musk could pitch in or they could hold a nationwide fundraiser for people to send money and money companies like Boeing and Lockheed could match funds. Or they could take down the original, cut it up into small pieces and sell them to raise money to build an exact replica out of materials that will stand up to the elements for decades.
If they're going to scrap it, why not just leave it there until it collapses on its own? It could last decades longer and the guy wires would keep it from falling over, it can only crumple down..
Every thing deuterates in time, looks like to me if proper maintenance have been done, such as repainting it with really expensive paint would have helped. What's the inner structure look like, who knows, the guy didn't give specifics.
