Retro Repair: Sega Saturn PSU (Attempt…) – Doomy's Retro Quest

I attempt to repair Blanco’s ill fated Sega Saturn. I ordered the replacement capacitors from Mouser.com but you can pick them up from any electronics store that sells caps. If you’re doing the same you will need basic knowledge of soldering, how PSUs work, and all the equipment that goes along with it.

WARNING: Opening any electronic device with internal power supply can cause a deadly electric shock. If you do not know what you’re doing, please do not attempt this without learning the dangers and precautions first!

Here’s the part list for the Model 1 MK-80000 but your PSU may be different so please desolder and check them before ordering:

(All Caps are manufactured by Nichicon)
200v 120uF – UCY2D121MHD
10v 4700uF – UPW1A472MHD
16v 2200uF – UPW1C222MHD
10v 2200uF – UPW1A222MHD
16v 47uF – UPW1C470MDD
16v 330uF – UPW1C331MPD (you need 3 of these)

Il recently bought a saturn which has the same power board as your, mine did not power on at all. I replaced q1 and now I got the blinking light. I dont think the caps are bad. As someone said, i'll check the diodes

A year later did you ever figure it out?

This is such a shame :'( I was hoping to resolve the exact same issue I have with my Saturn. It does that same flicking sound but from the PSU. I hadn't used it in maybe 5 years so I don't understand what could have happened!

Socky Noob says:

You don't have to replace the capacitors with direct copies like you did do you? As long as it's the same type, has the same or higher voltage, and the right amount of microfarads, it should be good right? Also, how do you know what kind of resistors to get if you have to replace them?

watching this after I fried my jap skeleton Saturn with 240 :/ managed to fit a pal psu though so all good

Mark Ellul says:

After a while of working perfectly mine starts making a whizzing noise from the cap near mains socket (grey box) it only happens after I turn the console off and back on again, not during operation. The effects are the picture starts rippling, it will not spin discs and the access light will keep blinking even with the door open….. seems like e weird fault and I have found nothing on the net about it, might try and replace it see what happens…. If any of you guys have experience with such a fault pls drop a line…..Cheers

Have you run a continuity check on the voltages? I recall the board doing this when it is shorted out.

PyrateZombie says:

I had a shorted Zener diode that was causing the clicking noise.
