another repair…halfshafts and other goodies on a 94 Saturn

Got a call to replace both half shafts on a 94 saturn. When I got the car apart it became obvious it needed other parts. I ended up putting both halfshafts i…

@RandallFlaggNY HeHe, yes I do…I get reminded occasionally by having to
work on vehicles from the north, or even from the coast. It definitely
becomes a different animal when dealing with rusted nuts and bolts. I will
have to check out richpin06a’s video, I am all about learning new tricks.
Yeah, an impact is a very valuable tool, I dont have a full set of torches
anymore, but I will still occasionally use my smaller propane torch to heat
stubborn/rusted nuts/bolts. It works, just takes longer

@RandallFlaggNY We’re in N.C, rust isnt a normal problem around here on
cars…unless they came from somewhere else. These control arms came off
with the greatest of ease. I dont remember what size tools were used, but I
woulve used a combo wrench to remove the control arm to spindle nut. For
the Nut/bolt holding it to the frame I probably used a 1/2″ drive
wratchet/socket, and the same for the nut on the end of the sway bar.
…Again, I was fortunate enough to be working on a rust free car.

I will give that a try i am finally able to get back to working on it the
axle shaft came off no problem this one just seems to be giving me the
problem i will see what i can come up with to pop it out, the other shafts
no problem. The inermediate shaft in the trans problem, Ill let ya know how
it goes i should be getting to work soon i gotta finish this car up

damnit! I thought I deleted that extra title/intro! I’ll have to re do
it…orsomething.

utoobube says:

@JDawg965 Use a prybar between the trans and the shaft and give er a good
tug, it should pop out. theres a retainer ring on it to keep it from just
coming out and you have to give it some persuasion to get it past there.

RandallFlaggNY says:

The lower control arm to subframe bolt is notorious for being rust shut.
Especially if you are in the salt belt. Was it hard to get them off? Where
is the car located? What tools did you use?

JDawg965 says:

I got a question for ya, I have a customer that has a leak coming from the
intermediate shaft where it goes into the trans, How do i remove that
shaft? i have it all apart everything out of the way but it seems like that
shaft has a little play when i go to pull it i out but wont completely come
out of the trans? it is a 2001 Saturn SL1 i am new with saturn’s let me
know thanks!

RandallFlaggNY says:

@utoobube Wow. Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know how lucky you are
not to have to deal with salt encrusted nuts and bolts? I don’t have a
torch, nor an air compressor and impact wrench. I’m thinking of buying a
Makita 6906 3/4″ electric corded impact wrench. That’s how bad it is here
with a 15 year old car. Richpin06a did an entire video on how to free that
nut and bolt. Search for his video “Removing rusted control arm bolts.”

@RandallFlaggNY Also, I was a roadservice mechanic out of Philadelphia for
a while and had my fair share of rusted fasteners…I was so glad to move
back south, lol!
