I just did this today. Mine were toast. HERE ARE SOME TIPS IF YOU ARE DOING THIS WORK:
The problem I had was that even if you have an 18mm wrench (which I didn't have), it should be very low profile, otherwise your wrench (I used my adjustable) will push the boot back as you're tightening the link back in, and it's VERY DIFFICULT to reseat.. I was unable to reseat it so I said "f*** it" and put it in as it was.
On the first link I attempted to remove, there was too much tension so I couldn't remove it. I ended up jacking up the control arm and the loose link came out NO problem. 2nd link was much easier to remove and to reinstall. The nuts weren't too tight but I opted to use WD-40 just because I wanted to.
Autopsy is right- there is no room between the bottom bolt and the lower control arm. I tried a socket knuckle adapter, which sort of worked.. Ended up using a small extension so that the ratchet would fit behind the control arm. I would recommend you do this job with two 18mm wrenches (at least for the lower bolts).
TORQUE SPEC LINK BOLTS: 47 ft-lbs
TORQUE SPEC LUG NUTS: ~81 ft-lbs
Results:
I took a quick drive around the block and down to the gas station. It is making less clunking but I still need to hunt down some suspension noise. It seems like I have reduced the hollow-clunking sound significantly. The car also "feels" better, more responsive, and doesn't roll as much mid turn- but that could be placebo. We will see how it goes on my 30 minute drive to work tomorrow.
Thanks Auto Autopsy for the vid.
So I need to do this so I was mhmm maybe auto autopsy has something n bingo thank u.. u were the first channel I subscribe as in Saab channels
Hello , can you send me your email to send you a few pictures of my saab 9-3
Don't forget to torque the end link nuts to 47 ft-lbs. And replacing the end links do not affect alignment because they are not structural to the suspension geometry.
I just picked up an 07' 9-3 w/ Koni's and Eibachs 183k miles for $3200. Nice other than curb rash rims. My only complaint, why the internal cartridge oil filter?
the rubber on mine are just… gone lol. i have an appointment for some other stuff at a shop, that included
0:50 Goofy ahh jack noises
Like i mentioned on Cyd's video last year about these things, I maintain three 9-3s including a 2010 Aero with only 40k miles, and after having to change out the links on all three (including one with similar mileage to yours), I believe these things should be considered as a 40k-60k mile service item. I bet your 9-3 is missing quite a few clunks now 🙂 So glad they're cheap 🙂
Thanks a lot I’ll keep this in mind as the time comes mean time Ima head out to the water and make some noise around town guys Be safe
I remember first time I got the S60 inspected and it failed.
The right Swaybar end-link was completely shot, like in Two pieces shot.
Yeah that was kind of embarrassing as a professional mechanic, but in my defense i was going to pre inspect it before I went to the inspection, but i ran out of time. I even saw it from the waiting room when they were inspecting it.
Cake….now how about a video of changing the rear links
Top effort brother, such a useful post
Did you notice a difference in handling after doing this?
