►The condition of your Volvo’s front struts significantly affects how comfortable and composed your suspension is. That comfort and control go when they wear out, leaving you with a bouncy and squishy ride. Struts typically last around 80,000 miles before wear is noticeable, but that heavily depends on environmental factors. Replacing your front struts will restore the ride quality your Volvo was intended to have.
A worn strut will make itself apparent. It can leak fluid onto the shock body, make loud clunking noises over bumps, and allow you to rock your car back and forth by hand. They won’t fail catastrophically, but your ride will be significantly worse while you continue to ride on them. Replacing them is a reasonably straightforward process requiring only a few tools, so there’s no reason to wait long.
In this video, Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro’s Professional DIYer, replaces the front struts on a Volvo SPA XC90.
