What can we say, Dave Welch is a master at this stuff. This time, he shows us the nuts & bolts of repairing rusty floors and rockers with new sheet metal.
This is a deep dive from assessing the damage and replacement patch panel options, to cutting the metal off step-by-step and getting it all back together correctly.
Like we said, Dave is a classic truck Specialist and he’s got plenty of tricks for nearly every project on your classic Chevrolet or GMC pickup!
I'm in the middle of replacing all the same rusted out parts, cab supports, lower pillars, inner rockers, outer rockers, kick panels and rear corner panels on my '65 C10. There wasn't much left of them to use for aligning the new panels, so I just cut out everything. Now trying to install the new cab supports and A & B pillars with nothing to line up to. I'm worried about how the outer rocker will line up with the door and fenders. I'd like to figure out how I can be sure the inner and outer rockers will line up fairly close with my door gaps. Any thoughts would be much appreciated, thanks.
when you're putting the door on and off to check gaps, is weather stripping on the cab and/or the door?
What if yours doesn’t have the floor support left?
Do I install rocker panels or floors first
Great video I'm going to use it on my 1966 chey k20 put they don't show how to change the floor cab support and brace for the mount
I watched 3 videos before finding you, it was a revelation, eyes wide open. Thanks so much for the step by step.
Link for the patch panels is broken and i can't seem to find a match to the ones you used. help!!
You make it look easy, can you use a plasma cutter when you get in a corner where a grinding wheel is tight? Or is it too much heat in the metal?
This is one of the best videos of welding a cab I’ve seen. I just got a 66 that’ll need some patching.
I’m going to try using a C60 cab for my C10 Short Box chassis
I wish this channel didn’t die
I just found your videos. I'm getting ready to start my first extensive restoration in 30 years and I think you're the guy to watch. Thanks so much for the videos, gives me hope.
I wish you guys shipped to Australia.
This is very well explained valuable information. I’ve been watching many of your tutorials and am impressed with the professionalism and easy to follow dialogue. You are perfect for these. I’ve restored 1964-1966 mustangs with my dad as a teenager and want a 1964 C-10 now that I’m a journeyman tradesman. Thank you for taking the time to do them so well.
At some point I will need to install this or something similar…$$
If you need cab corners, Do you do that repair before this? Thanks
great video, im just trying to find the rust on this truck…
You are the best Dave! Great work and attention to detail along with a ton of patience! Thanks for all you do and teaching on these videos. People today do not always realize the value of a professional tradesman. I've built 4 vehicles so far and I always learn something I did wrong or something new when i see your videos. Thanks again and keep up the great work!
When drilling out spotwelds, NEVER use a small drill bit 1st like he did because it will walk on you-thats NOT the correct way. Always start with a hammer & a punch. Your punch wont walk. Then use your spot weld cutter.
Nice explanation with simple how To's as you perform inner and outer rockers that will be next on my own to do list !
Great video, Dave.
Hi ya doin I watch you Dave do this 62 you do that so well I own a 63 that needs the exact same thing done to it
