Ep. 7 – Saab 900 Head gasket repair

Hobbyist mechanic Lee Kelso continues a mechanical refresh on a 1989 Saab 900 Turbo convertible with an important bit of preventative maintenance – replacing the head gasket. See the preparation necessary, the challenge of removing stubborn head bolts and what to look for as signs your head gasket has failed.

This episode also shows preparations for timing chain replacement, removal of the turbo, exhaust manifold, intake manifold and timing chain. Whew…lots of work in one episode.

This series explores Saab’s unique engineering and other design features that make the Saab 900 a classic increasing in value.

I’m just a DIY mechanic learning as I go and sharing what I find interesting about the unique engineering and design of the Saab 900.

Look forward to all your videos on the Saab 900 turbo c. I am on my second classic and its truly a well ballanced and fun car to just drive around in on a sunny day.

Do you have any advice for cleaning the block surface? I've read about several ways, using roloc discs, abrasive pads, razors. I'm trying to replace the head gasket on my 1997 Saab 900 se turbo

I'm in the process of restoring my 87 900 s. It's sat for years and needs a ton of work, but I think deserving of a restoration. Keep up the good work and I'll be following.

Hello Lee , Greetings from Portugal. My name is Dario Galvao and I'm the founder of the Saab Club here in Portugal.Just like you , I love Saabs , my father was a mechanic on the Saab brand for 35 years…and even I don't do for living , I simply wait for the weekend to go to my garage and work around my Saabs….. you can see my projects here : https://www.facebook.com/mysaabgarage/posts/Β in fact you will find that I'm building a saab 900 convertible for my son….. πŸ™‚ I'm following your videos and they are amazing….keep them coming. For the turbo….I believe for the size of it you have a Garrett t25??Β  You can buy the kit and change it yourself , but sometimes they need to be adjusted and balanced in a special machine due to the revs that the shaft reach. So , you can save it in buying the kit but I would strongly recommend that then you take the turbo to be "balanced". Those cars like mine , some versions came with a Garrett T3 , much more nicer ,Β and gives you that kick in the seat with a big smile attached. If you need any help from the other side of the Atlantic let me know. With kindest regards.

Great video, so glad I found you on reddit!

SaabSquad says:

I've got 2 c900 cars and the turbo on my convertible is blowing oil through the intake and has such a bad boost leak that the idle is choppy and and it often dies when you hit the clutch, haha, so when you decide what to do you should let me know or make a video or something!

Tbird 62 says:

Hey Lee! I thought I would ask you if you have any leads on a Saab 900 Turbo parts car for me to use as a donor so I can swap the power train into my non-turbo 900s Convertible. I live near Chicago, so if you find anything in Indiana I would be interested! Thanks!
