A SAAB Story (No Speedometer & Fuel Gauge)

A SAAB Story (No Speedometer & Fuel Gauge)

In this special episode, I visit my home town of Ithaca, NY and team up with Josiah of Blue Skies Mobile Auto Repair.
We get called in to diagnose a 2006 Saab 9-3 with a non-operational speedometer, fuel gauge, and “Christmas Tree” dash.

This turns into a really fun and educational case study…even the owner gets involved!
Can we join forces to prevent the PARTS CANNON??

I've had my Pico Scope 3205 for almost 20 years now. I don't have all the fancy leads and jumpers you have. I use mine for industrial control systems. Damned happy with it. I don't use it for months at a time. When I do use it, it always works. Most helpful for me in my fields is the Modbus decoder. I deal with a lot of RS485 networks…essentially the same voltages as CAN and Ethernet copper. There is nothing magical about the automotive networks,….they were derived from industrial control networks.

Jurist says:

So what did we learn?

That you did the continuity on the left rear when you fount the break… But you just went and found the break on the right rear and didn't do the continuity check once you found the break…

SO you created a bit of a headache for yourself.

Otherwise just a great logical approach to finding the issue as always.

Just had a cool little case study on a 2000 F250 7.3L. Intermittent loss of speedometer and ABS light illumination. Plugged in a cheap handheld Bosch scan tool I bought years ago and the symptoms improved immediately? Read the codes and was given a C1230 Rear Center wheel speed circuit malfunction. Barely touched the wires at the rear diff connector and one of them broke instantly lol. No parts required!!

M H says:

Although you are very proficient, It seems to me your video was longer than necessary as checking the wire first, should of been priority #1….

emrfixit says:

May want to do the same thing to the fuel cel too1

colin ellicott says:

I wonder how the 'old school' tech would have found the root cause of this failure without advanced tools?
Divining rod? Chakra realignment? Or the go to dried out gourd shaking dance around the fire naked howling? ๐Ÿ˜‰

additude obx says:

Crikey!!
Two single wire failures on one each rear wheel speed sensors at the same time.
These problems look for you…..
Once I had two headlamps go out simultaneously leaving me with brights only.
Once I had an intermittent incandescent lamp in the rear 3rd brake light that would fail every 2-4 days giving me a brake fail in the dash idiot lights. Go to troubleshoot…. it worked…. no failure…couple of days… failure…. cat and mouse for a month….
But that's none of the stuff you see….

Walczyk says:

If you asked me I'd say continuity check, and also checking for power up top.

Wim Philipsen says:

Fuel gauge us working too?

Raymond Ganczak says:

Why was there no 12v at module connector?

Ozzy Krahn says:

i think sabb is made by gm

Michael Sackstein says:

On those Saabs itโ€™s very common for the abs module to malfunction overtime in which case you need to send it out for rebuilding. I see that all the time on those

Dr. Craig D. Smith says:

Got to be careful with those NOS floor jacks, hit the button and the car will do a back flip.

palladini971 says:

Sounds like a Blown fuse to me at about the 20:00 Minute mark.
