Porsche Boxster & Cayman 987 Rear Exhaust & Silencer Installation Guide

Porsche Boxster & Cayman 987 Rear Exhaust & Silencer Installation Guide

So here is the final part of my exhaust installation guide for the Porsche Boxster & Cayman 987. Here I show you how to install the rear silencers (back boxes). You can also use this guide to remove them. Removal is simply the reversal of fitting 😊

We also have special guests in this video – namely my dogs Lottie and Luna. They often sneak into my garage and steal anything that is on the floor – bolts, rivets, washers, tools etc… I also managed to slice my finger open during this video – watch out for those gaskets – the edges are razor sharp!

This is ass backwards. I have a 987.2. The stock silencer flows well and sounds great. It keeps the car quiet at low rpm’s which is important for daily driving. There’s no performance to gain anyhow just in the silencer. Exhaust tip replacement can improve sound a little if you have a base model.

What you should definitely replace are the headers, where the cats are. It takes some fiddling and might require an ECU flash (some cars do some don’t) if you choose open race headers.
Either way, removing the bolts holding the header and silencer is an absolute bitch of a job. And finding bolts that fit back properly is difficult too. So find a full kit if possible.
Modifying the intake is just as important since most of what you hear in the cabin is intake noise. (And lot’s cheaper than an exhaust).
My base car now sounds better than many GT3s, though it’s still no faster than a Camry.
