How to replace a window motor on a 1982-1992 Pontiac Firebird/Chevrolet Camaro

How to replace a window motor on a 1982-1992 Pontiac Firebird/Chevrolet Camaro

I did this to my 1991 Trans Am. Very easy job… MUCH easier than removing the whole regulator, which is what the service manuals tell you to do. Good luck! …

Joe Case says:

New motor is 34 at Autozone, and it also comes with new bolts to replace
the rivets and has bolts for the bracket

bithelisa says:

Very good idea, thank you for sharing!

Artyfil says:

@MrTru007 Good job on the purchase…. but I don’t really understand the
question.

Kelly Medley says:

Yep you gotta drill it, just get a regular old power drill and a small
drilll yull be fine. Don’t be shy.

Artyfil says:

@greasybilly27 No problem! And an update, I’ve driven the car for at least
4000 miles after I have done this and the window still works like new. 🙂

Artyfil says:

Did you watch the video? The window motor is RIVETED in and the only way to
remove it is by drilling out the rivets. If you’re talking about drilling
holes into the door then yeah you can get away without that step but you
have to remove the entire window regulator which is a HUGE pain.

Mark Pace says:

Do I have to actually drill holes in it to replace the existing window
motor I have in my 91 firebird? I just need to replace the old motor?

Artyfil says:

@MustangFan424 10,000 miles so far without any trouble! 😀

Kelly Medley says:

You da man hoss. Only did it take 30 min from start to finish or just to
drill and replace?

Artyfil says:

You hit the nail on the head. And I just used a regular cordless drill with
a small drill bit to make a small guide hole and then a large (1/2″ or so)
drill bit to make the big holes you see here. The reason the holes aren’t
perfectly round like you’d expect is because I was moving the drill from
side to side to expand them a little bit.

deliveryguyrx says:

MAD PROPS!! Great vid! I just did this on my ’92 RS this morning. It took me
2 hours, but most of that was going in and out of my basement looking for
shit.Plus I took my time.I used a 7/16″ bit to drill out the large holes
and a 3/16″ bit to drill out the rivets-drilled them out EASILY.I also did
this with the window all the way up.I put a big ass bolt through the round
hole in the top of the scissors mechanism; no clamps needed.Went great!
Thanks again!!

Artyfil says:

@jsting23 you got the right idea!

joe hdz says:

it really works i did it all by myself in less that 30 min , just one thing
if no one is helping you put some tape behind the motor holding the nuts
and you can just screw more easy

theweedman says:

Nice. GM definitely dropped the ball with the design. I’m sure it was well
known fact that these motors tend to fail, and these fuckers still didn’t
make the bolts holding the motor easily accessible. May I ask, what did you
use to drill those holes? I was thinking about purchasing both a rotary
tool and a power drill, but if there is any possible way to drill these
holes with a power drill and not damage the glass or the bolts holding the
motor, then I would prefer to buy only one tool.

Shawn Scaggs says:

Thirty Minutes! Lol

Aldog626 says:

Maybe thats why a smart man will use lock nuts.

Mark Robbins says:

Just did it to my 86 camaro z28 worked great alot quicker, then pulling the
whole door apart lol Thanks for the info 🙂

Artyfil says:

@nick98camaro Do what you want…. just don’t blame me if something goes
wrong.

Artyfil says:

@ratfinkzak thanks for the comment 🙂

MrTru007 says:

Thanks bro!! I need to replace the motor. Like that sil er thing u have in
your door. What does that hook up to. Like the power source. I am a new to
this car restoring stuff. So im trying to get advice. Im restoring my 91
camaro rs. I will start posting vids soon. And thanks again.

Artyfil says:

@MrTru007 Oh for the power source… there’s just a plug that goes directly
into the window motor, you can’t miss it. And yeah you can try ebay; that’s
where I got my window motor. just make sure you type in the right vehicle
(91 camaro). Good luck!

92ext says:

thank you SOOOO MUCH for this video! my window wouldn’t work on the drivers
side, so I followed your video and it was fixed in about 45 minutes! I did
go and get some allen head button bolts with lock nuts so it wouldn’t
loosen over time, and it works great. you rock Artyfil

Aldog626 says:

Good vid Artyfil. Just use lock nuts and you wont have any problems with
the nuts loosening over time.

Kelly Medley says:

Did you ever get them replaced?

johnnydio17 says:

Great help! I did the passenger side of my 92. I thought I was going to
have to follow the tech book from Chevy. Glad I found your video!!

ratfinkzak says:

Dude your so smart thanks!!!, you saved me a whole day!!!!!! With your easy
way

Artyfil says:

@nick98camaro Sorry man I don’t know anything about the 4th gens (93-02),
this just applies to the 3rd gens (82-92). But if it helps, I didn’t have
to deal with any spring when I did this one. I just drilled those 3 rivets
out and only the window motor popped out. But the process might be
different on a newer car like yours.

Yummygirl2 says:

I have an 84 pontiac bonneville.. Im replacing two window motors. I’m no
mechanic but Im handy and do a lot of my stuff myself.. The motors in this
video look exactly the same as mine. I was just wondering if I can do it
the same way?

Artyfil says:

@MustangFan424 btw you can always use loctite on the threads for more peace
of mind.

8437adam says:

Thanks man helped out alot on my 1984 Z28 Camaro!!!

Gavin Boik says:

How much is the new motor?

MrTru007 says:

Where should i get a window motor? Ebay??

Artyfil says:

@Yummygirl2 No idea; I’ve never worked on one. I’m assuming it would be
similar but don’t take my word for it.

Artyfil says:

I don’t remember, check online.

MustangFan424 says:

Later on down the road those bolts and nuts will walk out. This is why
rivots are used.

MrTru007 says:

Okay. Thanks!

Artyfil says:

@jsting23 No idea lol. My car doesn’t have the big glass hatchback since
it’s a convertible. try thirdgen (dot) org though.

Z28magic says:

Thanks for that vid, it work well. I did my 84 camaro in no time. Once
again thanks

MrTru007 says:

Nice video man. I just bought my 91 camaro 2 day. And need to replace both
motor windows on both sides. So what do u plug in dat motor at.
