Interesting video, I have a 96 Firebird that I’m selling as a Mach-anic
special. I live in a condo with very little tools and no place to work on
her. Fear it’s the fuel pump and the videos I’ve seen it’s either drop the
tank or cut open a trap door through the trunk. So I thought “Fuel Filter”,
back in the old days they where under the hood. Now seeing this and what
the rest of that car looked liked from underneath, out of my hands, I’ll
miss you Firebird.
If it’s clogged it could stop the motor from getting fuel. 1aauto.com

Recently my 99 cavalier broke down. I was wondering if the fuel filter
might have cause it?
@BJBM93 You could also try something a little stronger like PB Blaster or
kroil oil. That might help to break it free.
we’ll keep this request in mind in the event that we need to make this
repair in the future.
my 1997 pontiac sunfire was leaking from one fuel injector..i replaced it
then it was hard to start. starter was not engaging so i replaced it. car
started .with fuel shooting out of upper intake manifold and exaust. no
leaks from fuel injectors. what is causing this
Great video, thanks a bunch!!!
My gas gauge is currently not working. Will following this tutorial fix the
gauge or will I have to perform some other mechanical steps?
We currently do not have a fuel tank available to us for that particular
vehicle.
You should be able to just twist and tug it free as we show in the video.
They can be a little stubborn sometimes.
@heuylewis5000 Usually you can, but for some reason if you can’t you may
want to check the power going to the pump first before replacing it.
I am in the middle of trying to do this and i cant get the fliter lose.. i
have a 92 cavalier.. same lay out and everything ive sprayed it with wd40
but nothing will get it off.. any help??
You may have to spray some PB blaster into the stubborn line fittings. You
will have to twist the filter back and forth to break up the rust. Also
pushing the filter back and forth slightly will also help free it up from
the clips inside the fitting.
Can you make a video on how to fix the gauge? I’ve been told that my gauge
is no longer working.
saved me 70 bucks on labor. thanks guys!
You may have to go a different route and replace the line with some sort of
repair line, It normally has a special attachment at one end that will be
similar to the one that hooks up to the filter and then a straight piece
where you can secure the undamaged line to it. You can find this most
likely either on line or through your local parts store.
You could do that to help get rid of some of the gas in the line.
It should be, as gas tends to carry quite a bit of weight.
@mikefknjohnson19 It may be your fuel pump. You might want to have it
tested to see if it’s turning on with the key.
Hi i have a 92 auto cavalier and it’ll start an run for about 15 min then
it’ll die and wont start for a bit, i have changed the fuel filter but that
didnt fix the problem any ideas? is it the fuel pump or something easier?
“hopefully”
It should be the same, if not fairly similar to this Sunfire.
The noise might be coming from the exhaust. I would start there but also
you might have an issue with the timing chain if the exhaust is fine.
I have a 2000 Chevy cavalier and I didn’t see it where u were saying it is.
Unless it is there but there are wires all over where the filter should be.
i have an 2002 pontiac sunfire problem is when gau gauge is at 1/2 it means
empty but from empty i can only put maybe 25$ before the gas pump shuts off
could it be a venting issue would be great if you could get back to me
thanks
I cant seem to the black quick connect loose. alot of it broke off now all
I have is the part around the filler snout where it goes in the line no
shoulders. Any ideals on how to get it apart I have pulled and twisted Ive
tried to push the black part back in the line and pull on the filter
nothing has worked
@1aauto yes it is protected by a metal cover.
Connect the quick-connect fitting to the fuel filter using the following
procedure: Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male ends of the
filter and the fuel sender assembly. Push the connectors together to cause
the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place. Once installed, pull on both
ends of each connection to be sure they are secure. New O-ring Fuel filter.
Torque the fitting to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Negative battery cable
Pressurize the fuel system and verify no leaks.
The metal elbow coming off of the filter on the feed side has been
discontinued by GM. Is there a way to get around that part or use something
else? I changed the filter and gas is spraying from that elbow because it
is badly rusted.
i had the same problem. looks like the last time it was changed the plastic
clip was used. unable to get the line off. should it still come off by
twisting/pulling??
does anyone know where to get the elbow gas line? I looked at my fuel
filter and the elbow piece looks really rusty and rather have a spare elbow
pieve if that breaks
Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
This video was a huge help. How can i subscribe to other videos that are
for my ’96 2.2l sunfire. I am having difficulty removing front and finding
rear O2 sensors.
I just did my 98 cavaliers filter yesterday and it was a PITA! I dont have
the plastic disconnect fitting that goes on the inlet side of the fuel
filter. I have the metal fitting And the thing that got me was there is not
enough room to get ANY of my line removal tools to fit into the fitting
over the filter stem therefore I was forced to cut off the fuel filter
where the inlet stem meets the fuel filters body so I can actually use my
line removal tool. in which case it came right off afterwards
If the gauge is not reading the fuel level you will have to figure out if
the issue is with the fuel sending unit or if it is with the gauge itself.
A little may come out when you remove it. The fuel pump in the tank isn’t
running so there’s no gas being pushed through the hose toward the motor.

I am having the same prob tried a pair of pliers and still wont come off do
you have to twist like u r trying to loosin it to the left or does it
matter I was pulling as hard as I could and still would not come off what
should I try now
I checked the fuel pump relay and fuse they are fine i want to replace my
fuel pump never replaced one in a 2001 pontiac sunfire.i know how to
replace pump after thr fuel tank is removed but there isnt any videos that
show how to drop the tank is it like any other car or do i need special
tools.
Well explained and filmed. Very Helpful video.
