Budget Pontiac 400 Build – Flat Tappet Camshaft Install

Installing a budget flat tappet camshaft can be a cheap way to get big power in a Pontiac 400 rebuild. Whether its a 1967 Pontiac GTO or a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am, Pontiac 326 or the pinnacle of automotive history, Pontiac 455 the procedure is the same.

We wanted to review this first on the engine stand – we will be doing another camshaft swap in a vehicle down the road.

Great video. Look forward to more. I hate to be a downer on anyone project but the 8 valve relief budget piston is the worst choice of piston you can put in. Most people on the PY site that have used them with any kind of compression have ended up with pinging issues.
The other thing that is more of a question is putting break in lube on the cam journals rather then than just the lobes. The break in lube to my understanding is like a polishing compound. I don't know if it really matters when applying it for the cam bearing or not.

Just got a land yacht '64 Catalina with a 389 to pull and fix up. This makes me want to go more than just heads and intake.

Getting ready to pull our 400 out of the firebird today. It will need a new cam and we are still not decided on going with a roller set up but that would mean we have to swap out our rockers valve springs too so we kind of just want to keep it flat tappet Cam but just a more aggressive attack than factory.

Looking good. Don't forget to put the oil pump drive shaft in from the bottom before the oil pump and pan. Ask me how I know…lol.
