There is a lot of rumors about this cars rely ability and i’m here to
dispel some of ’em. I own a 2001 pontiac grand am SE. About 2 weeks ago i
drove 900 miles to go visit some family, during the drive and a long story
later an 18 wheeler ran its 2 back dully tires right over the front end of
my hood (actual truck not trailer) vehicle continued on for 400mi to
destination and 900mi back home with only replacing the headlamps, and the
brake pads still driving strong

thomaswalker says:

Ok, do you use DEX-COOL GM brand? If you do, STOP TODAY. DEX-COOL is too
strong, google it on the net for yourself, it was a class action lawsuit
against it. Go to Auto Zone and get PEAK, it’s green but it works for all
cars, just strong enough to keep your car cool, but won’t hurt the intakes.
Check and see if you have a leak….If you do STOP DRIVING THAT CAR! it
could be a leak in the radiator or intakes.

Kimberly Phillips says:

I have to change my thermostat on my car and it is the same type as
yours…any helpful suggestions or should I take it in? A friend is
offering to help but, I am worried it will just end up worse.

thomaswalker says:

Dude, I’ve had this car for 10 years. It’s still running. The problem with
the gaskets with the Dex cool….it ate up the aluminum heads.

thomaswalker says:

I’ma keep it, until the Wheels fall off, lol. you’re looking nice.

Inspirmentalist says:

my brother i wish i did know more about cars. im pushing a buick regal 1990
that i got at a very very very great price…250 bucks…runs great, just
need to replace my reservoir for my radiator too lol

boishorts day says:

hi this is my 1st car and thank u for the info please produce more info
about the pgam

thomaswalker says:

thanks corporateraider. the next car video I will show the mileage.

dkhill27 says:

Believe it or not its so much easier to just take the top intake manifold
off. Leave the TB attached. Take off intake snorkel. Makes it so much
better to get to the neck to take the bolts off. Also gives you a time to
paint your intake man if you would like or clean it up

thomaswalker says:

@Thegreatjoker13 Ok, the lights are suppose to stay on until you cut the
car off. It’s in the design to prevent you from leaving the car lights on
when you’re not driving so you wouldn’t discharge the battery. You can
change manually were the signal light switch is located….If I were you, I
would keep it the way it is.

Bigroberto2008 says:

@Thegreatjoker13 thanks man i’ll definity do that, when it stops
raining…lol!!

thomaswalker says:

you’re the damn idiot. I’ve have this car over 10 years. I got almost
400,000 miles on it. I bet you can’t name anyone that is over 200,000
miles…..The intake problem was the Dex-cool anti-freeze. I bet you didn’t
know that genius!

midnightraven00 says:

The only damage it took was cosmetic, the engine and components, chassis,
suspension and everything is fine no problems. The only other minor
inconvenience it caused was a metal lower radiator line was pinched and was
fixed in about 2 minutes with a small tubing bender the car continues to
run great with over 97,000 miles (but i take great care of it)

thomaswalker says:

My bad getting to you late. The 2001 models have a defect so at times, it
will not start. When you put the Key in the ignition, put it on the ON mode
for about 15 min. Hopefully that will work out. Sorry about the late
response.

stichy420 says:

@silentwolf24 the 04-05 grand ams still suffer from head gasket failure.
There is nothing you can do to prevent it other than having them replaced
with a fel-pro gasket kit. My headgaskets failed at 108k 🙁

silverboyzzz says:

Wow, mine’s a 2003 3.4L V6 as well, over 177,000km (109,982 miles) and
never had a head gasket or intake manifold problem. Guess I was lucky.

thomaswalker says:

@SulphuricHolocaust Update…My car is at 335,000 miles. Actually the 3,000
mile oil change mark is outdated. Technology has changed and oil quality is
better than it was 20, 30 years ago so the Updated suggestion is every
6,000 to 7,000 miles believe it or not.

theman7699 says:

Its why idiots shouldnt own cars. They neglect them then when their neglect
is backfireing in their face they sell neglected car to a innocent person
and say, oh yea its mint.

thomaswalker says:

@trackspike64 yes, that could be your intake gasket.

Blu3Rhino says:

Hey twalk, just curious the owners manual makes a huge point to use only
the Dex Cool coolant with 50% mixed “pure, drinking water,” which is the
terms they use. They claim it won’t damage the aluminum. You say is will?
Also to get so many miles on yours, do you use a certain type/brand of oil,
filters and plugs? Thanks.

SulphuricHolocaust says:

If you’re changing your oil every 5 to 6,000 miles that could be a source
of some of your problems. Typically you should change it every 3,000 miles
or every 3 months, whichever comes first. The 3.4 is notorious for blown
head gaskets and intake gaskets but if you stay ahead on your maintence and
treat it right you can help to get more miles out of it before it happens

thomaswalker says:

Bitch shut the fuck up with all that nonsense about neglecting a gotdamn
car that I still have. Did you have some neglect issues when you were a
child.

grngs1 says:

Your good to change it every 6 to 7000 miles, thats bullshit what they say
“change it every 3000 mi. The oil companies want to sell oil!!

thomaswalker says:

@TRICE54 sorry so late, you want to get your intake gasket checked and
thermostat replaced as well.

jilli Matheson says:

i have a 2000 grand am se and it stopped running the other day and when i
try to start it it just sprays out gas. im told that there can jus be some
bolts missing or its thbe fuel pump but i dont think so. right above the
front of the oil pan there are 3 threaded holes in triangle formation bout
an inch apart one of them shoots gas out of it when i try to start it im
missing whatever goes there

MrFor3play says:

i have a 2000 gramd am and 110000miles wanna sell it holla at me

seand67 says:

Hey Brotha, you still have those fumes coming though the vents in your dash
? Just checking on you

thomaswalker says:

wow! I hope it’s all well!

silentwolf24 says:

I think parts will begin going bad when u have 293,000 miles on the
motor. The intake gaskets in the early 2000 to about 03 or so began to crack
causing them them leak. They began using new gaskets with metal slugs in em
to prevent the gaskets from cracking.I have a 05 Grand am gt with 97,000
and the gaskets still have not leaked as they r updated one’s but had them
replaced as wasn’t sure if they were the new style. It depends how the car
is taken care of as how dependable it will be.

thomaswalker says:

@ TarayWalmsley: oh yeah, I got about 297,000 miles on it now. I’m going to
post a video when it hits 300,000. take care!

RideLightning225 says:

Sure thing! I love taking care of my car too. I also have a 2001 Pontiac
Grand Am GT1 coupe. It’s pretty sweet. I take care of it so well some
people think it’s like an ’06 or ’07 with 50K miles when they stopped
making grand ams in 2005 and my car is over 111,000mi. =D

thomaswalker says:

I know man!

thomaswalker says:

Most likely its a leak right on the bottom of your windshield. Check there
first, because people I know with that model had the same problem. I would
take it to a window/glass repair and at least see if that’s the issue.

VintageTwalk says:

@midnightraven00 I will check you out on fb man.

kabron09 says:

man i have that same extact car n model.. i will fill my coolant tank up n
it drinks it within 10 damn miles!! idk what to do with it.. n it runs hot
when i drive on the highway..

theman7699 says:

Dirty oil isnt the same as new dumb ass old oil breaks down cant fight
friction change it every 3000 and your engine will last a long time. Thats
factory intake gaskets, get them changed problem solvd. Fuck anyone who has
beef wid gm engines especially 3.4 you cant kill them engines. Just ask
guys that killd engines during the cash for clunkers campain. 3.4 put up
and out lastd any engine when oils were draind and run full throttle.

Jovan Lopez says:

the intake gaskets are know to go bad on the engines the 3.1-3.4

corporateraider77 says:

Wow. 293k. No wonder it’s been giving you trouble. Good to see you posting
again.

stylinwiley says:

i have change mine oil in all my cars at 5k miles no tic no oil burning.

smithdsmit says:

I have a 2001 grand am.my headlights will not shut off.even when I shut car
off and pull key out.the only way to get the lights off.Is to disconnect
the batery.any suggestions on how to fix it.Is there a way to directly hook
headlights up to a toggle switch?

howie642001 says:

i change my oil every 2 thousand miles

thomaswalker says:

lol, yeah man, I did a lot of drinking in a six year period. My driving
actually slowed down in the past 2 years.

myself andI says:

If you have any questions on these engines, you can ask me. I have a 1996
pontiac grand am se and I just dropped the engine and trans and then swaped
the engine. Then I also did the heater core. While the new engine was out I
did the intake gaskets. These engines are infamous for bad intake gaskets,
also I did the thermostate, it’s a hell of a lot easier with the engine out
of the car than in. Also, did the heater core. Well, gotta go seeyah and
goodluck!

howie642001 says:

if u use regular oil in yo engine change it every 2000 miles and tour
engine will love it

Blu3Rhino says:

From my limited experience of owning this model and with your miles, yes
the thermostat probably need replaced. I have replaced them on other
vehicles though and don’t think they normally “leak” but maybe the seal is
shot. And if the car (3.4L engine) hasn’t had the head gasket replaced by
165,000 miles, get ready. Mine had a catastrophic failure at about 162,000
miles ($1,100 to fix it and a couple related parts).

VintageTwalk says:

@GOTMILKLOL1 that’s cool.

Bigroberto2008 says:

hey man does your starter crank at all? and if it does do ur engine
turnover, at least to wear it runs for a split second and cut off? If so i
had the same with mine, IF u still can’t find the issue try to check your
air bag module. My mechanic had to take out my entire passenger seat and he
pulled up da carpet and took out a little grey box inside with a yellow tip
to plug it in. He took that shit out and if fired right up. Cuz my damn
thing was rusty and had messed up my theft system in a way

seand67 says:

The Twalk Mobile! Hey Bruh, I’m Glad the problem you encountered recently
wasn’t THAT serious. Over 300K and STILL rolling…;~)

Thegreatjoker13 says:

@trackspike64 Check upper radiator hose mount to engine…. My car was 9yrs
old n the plastic hose connection had corroded away…. I fixed it n
problem solved…
