the thin wire is for a small eyelet and the thicker is for the larger
eyelet, thicker wire wears they eyelet as die cast is what all hood
ornaments are made of except rolls is stainless steel.the die cast ford
used the thicker wire and it would wear thru the eyelet

How did you get the spring off? Did you bend the wire hooks straight and
slide off the spring? I need to fix an ornament but did not want to destroy
the only extra parts I have. Like you said hood ornaments are hard to come
by.

Yes, you need to carefully straighten the hooked portion of the spring. I
might suggest going to the junkyard and getting a couple spares in good
condition because if the spring is rusty it tends to snap.
