Oldsmobile 455 Rocket V8 Timing cover removal October 22, 2011

Looking at the seal area of a vibration damper for a 455 Oldsmobile V8, then explaining a little about how Oldsmobile fitted pistons into cylinders. From there, the removal of the front timing cover to see what was lurking under there. All in all, still not too bad. Again mark the parts, categorize them, take pictures, it will help much when the whole thing goes back together.

Thanks! We all have to keep the old classics going one way or another!

That 70's show would be proud of your Vista Cruiser, Cool Vid Man.

spikedpunk says:

It works the arm up and down on the fuel pump.

kirk angel says:

and what exactly does that eccentric do?

kirk angel says:

so is a impact air gun going to be too much on it?I bought another timing chain just in case i dont get gear drive on right.

spikedpunk says:

You are very welcome! Use a breaker bar, make sure the flexplate is braced on the other end, and give the breaker bar a good, smart tug. Remember, the bolt is torqued down to well over 100 LB/FT and is a fine thread. Combine this with a little rust, and it is a stubborn one!

kirk angel says:

thank you for the answer.I tried to get that balaner bolt off it broke my socket wrench.Do i have to use an impact to get it off?my motor is still in truck.

spikedpunk says:

Because I am not going that route on my (eventual!) 455 project, I can't answer this for sure, but I do remember in some past conversations that with some of the gear drive models, you can use the eccentric and of course with that, the original fuel pump. I can delve into my records a little!

kirk angel says:

i have a 75 455 olds i am putting gear drive in it is it true i would have to run an electric fuel pump because of the eccentric?

Chris Baer says:

Hi,
Any idea as to the years, when Olds put NYLON gears on the cam?
(If you watch my vid', the gear I yank from my 260 V8 has an all-metal gear. So, I was wondering if my 260's cam gear and timing chain might have been changed, years earlier.)(?)

spikedpunk says:

@hardtackjack Thanks! Time and circumstance will tell when the project gets completed, I am in no rush really, just gathering up parts and things as they come along. It not like 'I gotta have it right NOW' going on. If it were really needed I am sure with the resources at hand it could be fully taken apart from the point it is at now and put back together in a couple of weeks. But for now who knows!

hardtackjack says:

@spikedpunk Oh no problem at all. Always a pleasure. =]

How long till you can get the 455 running on the stand?

spikedpunk says:

@hardtackjack I am glad it helped you out Drew. Lining things up and taking notes/pictures always helps out. Thanks about the words on Sammy's underside, this part of the project is still going on too.

hardtackjack says:

Excellent! That timing chain portion was a big help for me.

As a side note, the underside of Sammy is quite a sight to see! =]

spikedpunk says:

@quincyoil I did see the story, and picked up some decent facts there too. I did note the car was a a very similar, if not the same, as the wagon. Thanks for the kudos. Some days are better then others on the project. Right now it is all the cleaning and categorizing!

spikedpunk says:

@LordKorlik It will be a little while before this engine goes in. The bare bones yes, but it is even nicer when it all starts going back together. The cleaning and detailing is what takes much of the time, and then there is all the making sure clearances and measurements are correct.

Ethan Hopkins says:

i love seeing the bare bones of an engine. I'm still gonna miss the 350 when this goes in.

spikedpunk says:

@pearsonba350 You are very welcome again Brian. Any questions, please feel free to ask. You said you tried to PM me a while ago, why not try again about stuff and concerns you have.

spikedpunk says:

@RiotSk8Team666 Thanks Jimmy, a few things at a time, one day at a time, it will get done. I may very well go for one of the double roller units, it will be foolproof and easy, thank you for offering them. Will PM you soon about this. My mind set is to do bits and pieces whenever I am in the mood, there is no rush, such as cleaning a group of parts an evening or two, then one piston assembly. By doing a lot myself, funds can be saved, to be used for parts!
