GM Ignition System diagnosis: 1988 Olds Cutlass

This dusty “blast from the past” 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera isn’t having a good day.
Join me for a quick “in the field” diagnosis…raw and uncut 🙂

Special thanks to “Big Al” of “Big Al’s Garage”, located somewhere deep in the Central PA countryside…

How did you test the ignition control module? Did you connect one end of the alligator connector to the test light and the other end to the control pins on the module?

CountryBoy4ever says:

Awesome video. I love these cars. I have an '87 wagon with the 3.8.

James Kmenta says:

nicely done! do you recall if it was difficult to get to get a new control module

scott9050 says:

I knew what was wrong with the car before you started the diagnosis. After owning a half dozen iron dukes over the years, this is one of the most common problems.

Clete88 says:

Haven't seen the video yet, but you have one coil and 8 wires…..guessing this will be an easy fix.. cylinder specific fix I am guessing

Aaron Kay says:

I love watching these diagnosis videos because I'm trying to learn for myself how to do some of it. Does anyone know of any YT videos explaining the fundamentals of electronic automotive diagnosis troubleshooting like Ivan does here with the test light?

Cody Wichman says:

awesome video. I love how basic electrical knowledge, and circuit design knowledge is all you need. once you understand the fundamentals you can diagnose any ignition coil circut

valdarmort says:

wysetech2000 says:

Nice job as usual, Ivan.

Toyota Tech says:

Great work Ivan. I enjoyed big Al! Does he give you a hard time when you work for him? I imagine he's a character!

stuzman says:

Nice diagnostics Ivan even though the folks in the shop didn't seem to respect your knowledge. Good that you showed them at the end though! Keep up the good work!!!

Maic Salazar Diagnostics says:

Did you check the Harmonic Balancer Ring? I have seen some given spark just on two cylinders! The ring come loose and gets to close to the Crack sensor, eliminating the signal on that spot only! You should check the crank signal just to be safe! Specially on a 1988!

DC Rickerson says:

Nice diagnosis and video. Nice looking old Cutlass.

Ozzstar says:

nice diagnosis. the dude in the background was annoying when you were bench testing the module and coil
