Trans & Clutch 1 – Remove Transmission

Trans & Clutch 1 – Remove Transmission

This is the first in a multi-video series regarding clutch tech. The clutch itself is a simple mechanism, but it’s buried deep in the engine, so you can’t ju…

I have a 2002 honda civic lx and wen in drive it drags and sumtimes goes in
reverse while in drive wat should i do?

John Porada says:

Hey jafro. I have a 96 gsx automatic, having a trans problem, when the car
is in 1st 2nd or drive it will take off, second you give it some gas it
slips almost like a clutch us severely slipping, any ideas?

Jafromobile says:

’95 Eclipse GSX. That’s pretty much the platform my whole channel is about.
🙂

Ashton Lanier says:

what kind of car is it?

Irving alicea says:

i should probly do that

jorge gonzalez says:

ya empezaste mal tirando las herramientas y latas ya se que no sabes un
carajo

infaroot says:

that is a clean ass car

Jafromobile says:

For stuff that belongs to components, I bag and tag ’em. For big stuff like
transmission bolts, engine mounts… I draw a picture of the part on
cardboard, poke holes through where the bolts go, and shove the bolts
through the holes on the drawing. That helps you keep track of
different-length bolts and their locations. 😉

9xDEAD says:

I wish I could move as fast as you. How do you organize all your bolts?

Jafromobile says:

@zooflagette They can be a pain, but I’d continue trying to do what’s at
8:16 until it gives. A pickle fork will destroy the rubber boot. Notice
that I wound up having to use a jack, pry bar, AND a 4 lb sledge to free
it. Having someone else pry down on the LCA will give you more freedom to
be accurate with the hammer. Hit the knuckle, not the LCA. You can remove
the whole LCA & strut assembly, but I wouldn’t. I’d keep fighting it.

Kkupidknotz says:

@Jafromobile hey would you happen to know where i can purchase the Shift
linkages or cables shown in 4:25

Jafromobile says:

You came at a good time. I begin my 6-bolt build on Thanksgiving. Welcome
aboard!

marcus19141 says:

Would a 1 g trans fit in a 2 g

Jafromobile says:

I found a great video. I sent it to you, but anyone else with the same
question can benefit from this. If you haven’t checked out RoadRageCustoms,
do it. I’ve been a long-time subscriber, but couldn’t find this one for the
life of me using this new layout. It’s a SIMILAR job, definitely not a
guide. video id LwINjpaoJjg and I still recommend a service manual. You can
find it on Amazon cheap. 😉

zooflagette says:

@Jafromobile I got the joints seperated forever ago, thanks. My trans wont
come off but I threw my slave cyl back on and when I push the clutch in it
seperates about an inch and stays apart. I havent been able to get it any
farther apart. Do you think my input shaft is seized up?

SuperHubeny says:

Is there any difference in a 1g transmission install and a 2g? I am having
a heck of a time… I bought it from an individual and the transmission was
already out. Mine is all wheel drive and the transmission case seems to be
hitting on the rear crossmember and the input shaft of the transmission on
the clutch. I have no mounts out except the one on top of the transmission.
Any ideas?

Jafromobile says:

I just left it all connected. You just pull the 5 transfer case bolts and
pry the transfer case off. If you move the car, it will pull out and leak
gear oil from the transfer case. Leave the driveshaft installed in the
tailshaft of the transfer case and it won’t leak anything. You may need a
small pry bar.

Jafromobile says:

ROCK ON! Great to hear it!

pk10190 says:

Thanks a lot.. i own a couple of harbor freight tools and there great.. i
saw a 30 gallon craftsman for $370 u think its good? 10 gallon difference

marcus19141 says:

Ok thanks I guess I mite sale it then

Ben Mallow says:

One more… how did you get the driveshafts out so quickly?

Michael Puckett says:

Great Videos!

bmckenziegsx says:

Hey jafro, I love ur videos man there a dsmers dream guide to DIY repairs,
I own a 5spd 95 GSX as well and for some reason I’ve recently been locked
out of 1st gear :/ but I was wondering about spline count on our tranny’s?
Ive always been under the impression 91-96 awd tranny’s were
interchangeable but when I look for used ones there are always several
spline count options with one should I have for a 95?

Jafromobile says:

@TheMorbital Correct. Just remember all the cars on my channel still have a
transfer case, driveshaft, limited slip rear differential and can burn all
4 tires (when they run). At 7:02 you’ll see me pulling the transfer case
which is driven off the ring gear of the center diff. The AWD launch is
really the addictive factor on these cars, typically leaving WWD* cars in
the dust coming out of the hole. It doesn’t always go that way, but
usually. * WWD stands for “wrong wheel drive”. LOL!

Jafromobile says:

@7eventeenSkullz Oooh. Well. Probably not much in common with that kind of
vehicle. An Eclipse has a transverse-mounted engine (crankshaft goes
side-side) with front axles going directly into the transmission. An S10 is
straight-drive (front-back). If your vehicle is 4×4, it has a transfer case
delivering power to the front axle. If it’s automatic, you’ve got a lot
more fluid to drain, and might even need to drain the coolant. Don’t try it
without a service manual, but you can do it.

chris faircloth says:

where do u live Jafromobile i need ur help 🙂 im n north carolina

Jafromobile says:

I never got notified of this comment. Check your axle seals first. That’s
usually the culprit. You’ve got one on each side. The only other external
seals are the input shaft, and if you’re AWD, the output shaft. It’s not
likely to be leaking from the case, but if it is the only way to seal it up
right is to crack it open and re-apply the correct RTV.

Jafromobile says:

@pk10190 I bought it on-sale at Harbor Freight as well. I think I paid $400
for it. 40 gallon I think? It’s paid for itself a few times already. I’ll
get a bigger one next time.

beau m says:

thank u soo much for these vids dude ur awesome

TheMorbital says:

@VileFCboy i could be wrong, im sure there’s some folks here that will
answer your question, but from my knowledge i think EVERYTHING is in front
of the car. and yes the differential should be in the front either by or
part of the tranny since it has to move the front 2 wheels and has to
control the movement of both wheels as someone turns, and like you said..
it is a FWD, so the diff. has to be! im just stunned how everything is so
COMPACTED in that one area alone!

Brian Cather says:

Google “Ball Joint Separator Harbor Freight” This cheap tool is a little
different than the normal forks that you find in most stores and works
great at getting ball joints to come apart. You can still remove the pin
and it will function like a standard fork. I just wish my drive shafts
looked like yours do. Mine are covered in rust to the point where you can’t
see the line between the hub assembly splines and the drive shaft splines!

Jafromobile says:

What might help you is a video I just uploaded recently called “Install
clutch in a 1g turbo DSM swapped Elantra”. There I cover the differences
between 1g and 2g. The way the axles are installed, how many bell housing
bolts, how many engine mounts/trans mounts there are, etc. But you’ve found
most of the differences already. You don’t need to remove any other mounts
to do this, it’s just a tight squeeze. If you can line up the input shaft,
and the clutch is aligned… it should slip on.

Jafromobile says:

I’ve grown up with a 733iL, 740iL, 745iL… all of them went well over
300,000 miles. There’s been an 850csi, 650 (F12 series), a ’72 DeTomaso
Pantera GTS, ’65 Shelby Cobra CSX3009, a 1929 model A, and a half dozen
Volkswagons which aside from mentioning an 80 Diesel Rabbit, and a ’76
Scirocco, I will withhold my opinion. I was spoiled. My brother’s best
friend had a heavily modded ’73 super beetle which was too much fun, then
later bought a Bavaria :P~, and then an Alfa Romeo Milano. <3 BMW

wesmath1 says:

vacume bleeder is much easier than a spoon and its only like 20 bucks at
harbor freight and all you need is an air compressor

Nicky Goudy says:

Thanks for making this video. I’m in the process of replacing the identical
transmission with a new TRE one.

bcunknown says:

@Jafromobile thanks

Redline579 says:

Its sooo fun watching in fast motion

Jafromobile says:

@RightWinger78 Yes. The crossmember and mounts are different, as the 2g has
3 transmission mounts and 1 engine mount. The 1g/GVR-4’s have 1
transmission mount and 3 engine mounts. Otherwise it’s the same. beast in a
different exoskeleton. A JDM limited-edition leather-clad AWD 4WS ABS
dual-climate controlled awesome exoskeleton. Linkages, hydraulics,
transmissions are so similar that all of these videos still apply.

royaloreca says:

Great vid,…. now I know why I still drive a front engine rear wheel
drive, this looks very intimidating
