Remove the balance shaft plug on the rear side of the cylinder block and
insert a Phillips screwdriver {shank diameter 8 mm (.31 in.)} through the
hole. The balance shaft is in the correct position if the screwdriver can
be inserted at least 60 mm (2.4 in.)

HEY, awesome video with a simple explanation. Changing my timing belt soon
with no experience so this definitely made me understand every part more
easily.

How do you take the flywheel off in front of the cover and timing belt????
I can’t get the large center bolt broken loose because the outer flywheel
keeps spinning….any help would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!!

good info. thanks alot

Very cool…I have a Kia with the same engine and it runs great but has a
horrible vibration at any RPM. All the timing marks line up but the balance
shaft must not be timed right. I’ll check it using this method. Great video.

Thanks for the reply! I figured as much, but I don’;t remeber engine codes
well. so many!

CouncilOfDave says:

4G63 engines were in 90-99 Mitsu Eclipses, Eagle Talons, Plymouth lasers.
It was also in some Hyundai’s as well. The reason this trick works on
Mitsubishi engines, is because that Hyundai engine is actually a Mitsu
engine. 😀

thanks for the comment!

subtledriver says:

what is a 4g63? I don’t know the engine code for this hyundai, i work on
hundreds of engines! thanks for the comment, usually the sensor plate
doesn’t matter, its all about the alignment marks. make sure the plate was
installed correctly or mark it before removal. the car wont start and the
sensor can get damaged when installed incorrectly.

Noah Jacobs says:

great info i am currently replacing short block on the same engine and like
you said no where says to do that. wondering if you might answer another
question for me if you could?

Turbo Tyler says:

On a 4g63 do you have to line up the crankshaft position sensor plate to
the sensor or anything? Thanks.

I’m glad this helped you! I had to do the timing belt twice because of
this, there is no info about this in the instructions. It says stab a pin
in the side of the block to hold the balancer, but it failed to mention it
was gear reduction. I know what you mean about the two positions, But if
you have played with it for a while, you can tell the slight difference,
and know the happy spot.

subtledriver says:

your welcome, thanks for the comment!

I want to thank you for making this video. I was changing my timing belt on
a kia optima 2.4L engine and your info potentially saved me huge
frustration and the time to redo the job. I want to get you mailing address
and send you a little token of appreciation.. BTW, I think there are only
two positions that the gear can line up to. There are three points where it
wants to be stable..doesn’t matter, your info was extremely helpful. email
me your mailing address at brent-at-fourier-series com
