What would happen if you did get Grease on the top of the drive shaft?

Michael Craddock says:

Hello
Why do you put it in gear? Does this make it easier to remove the lower unit? I have a 115hp and the lower unit will not come off. I’m wondering if I put it in forward gear will it help…..?
Thanks!

Tuber dick… this is for a two stroke or two cycle if you want. There is no engine oil my bud.

Why no grease on top of the shaft

An excellent video.

David White says:

If your engine is overheating and you want to check the water pump use a tub of water not a pressure hose—dont ask me how I know–the first thing you should do any way is change the W Pump

I'm going to comment here so that another "home mechanic" researching this topic doesn't have to go through the pain that I did. First of all, thanks for making this video. I watched several videos before trying my impeller change for the first time. So long story short, nowhere in the the service manual or owner's manual does it say to drain the engine oil before dropping the lower unit. To my surprise, I had a flood of engine oil pouring out when I removed the shaft and dropped the gear box. I tried to research the problem on line and found a few people who had the same problem, but what they were being told was they had a costly engine oil leak and would need major repairs. This just didn't sound right to me, because I could see a hole at the top of the opening where the drive shaft stops, and my motor wasn't leaking before, so I started to do more research. I won't go into detail, but the bottom line is that at least on my 2013 115EFI Four Stroke, you need to drain the engine oil before removing the gear case. I confirmed this with three different Mercury certified mechanics and called Mercury customer service. I realize that a 2002 90hp may be different than a 2013 115, but I just wanted to mention this so someone else doesn't make a mess like I did.

You forgot the top shaft seal

Excellent Video. Thanks for sharing. I have a Mercury 90 HP 2 cycle 3 cylinders 2008 engine. Would the Quicksilver part no. you show, be the same for my engine?

Sanek hirurg says:

Hi. Tell me how to put forward. In what direction to turn the rod on the gearbox. And I for not knowing took it to neutral. Which way the propeller is spinning when you turn forward when viewed from the propeller?

Rogers Fix It Barn says:

Good job bro and saved the service fee for some shop.
