Great vid, thx. My kit is on the way.
if you are going to put an SSD in your optical bay you might want to save money and buy a SATA II SSD since the optical bay can not reach SATA III speeds. Putting a SATA III drive in your optical bay is overkill basically.
absolutely does not matter. you can use SSD to store everything as long as you can afford the storage. i have 2x 512 SSD in my macbook pro the optical bay is only sata 2 so i would not recommend using RAID. its actually much faster to use SSD only. if you dont have to use a regular HDD dont. Now there used to be problems with SSD’s wearing out the more they are written over. but newer models are better with that. i write over my SSD’s all the time and they are still running perfectly
OWWW MY EARS ARE BLEEDING!!!
I get how to put every thing into the mac I just don’t know how to format it the way he mentioned
Wtf was the end?? XD
Is it bad to have one SSD hard drive as BOTH the start up disc and the disc you use to store information on?
Like is it better to have two separate for a macbook pro or does it not really matter?
Great bid man! Can anyone tell me if this voids my warranty?
Just ordered one of these bad boys the other day. Cant wait to get this installed. I was a little worried when I read on the OWC site that the 6G SSD wasnt reliable in the optical bay but I saw that you could put the SSD into the spot of the original HDD so I am no longer concerned. Great video! So does the kit come with everything you need to do what you did in this video?
I wouldn’t recommend it, in the future you may decide you want to remove it and also if you ever have to take it to apple, you can’t put the optical drive back in.
It would be great if you answer this question.
Does the HDD is active and make noise when you use your SSD ?
Thanks a lot
Their are some SSD’s that perform better on Macs, but are usually more expensive and not worth the money, it is probably best to go with one from OWC or Corsair, they are both excellent brands.
All of the tools needed: screwdriver, spudger… are included with the data doubler.
It isn’t the same thing
Joshua is right, but it all depends on which SSD you buy, alos if you have a MBP earlier than 2011 it doesnt matter because they both accept 3g and 6g
At least on the 2011 MBP’s the SATA connection for the optical bay is only 3G, while the SATA for the hard drive is 6G. If you buy a 6G SSD you’ll want to plug it in where the hard drive is to get the full speed. The SSD in this video is a 3G, so it really doesn’t matter which SATA connection he uses.
You can get the same thing on ebay for $10, Snazzy.
What tools are needed for this?
Hi. I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch i5 2.3 GHz version. Just got a OWC Mercury Electra 6g 60GB version with a data doubler. getting only 71 MB/s write and 191 MB/s via blackmagic speed test app ?… why am i getting such crappy speeds. Can someone help me ?.
That awesome moment when one of your favorite youtubers has a tutorial over what you were looking for.
Just buy a hdd caddy from ebay. Does the exact same job for about $15
Except impacts don’t matter when you have an SSD.
they’ll be expensive until it becomes mainstream.
@thatsnazzyiphoneguy Yo, Quinnathen. Is this still worth it? It has a 2 and 1/2 star review on amazon while there is one for $17 that has a 4 and 1/2 star review on it. Also, where can I find a cheap 250 GB SSD? They are so expensive. Nice videos btw.
check out MCE OptiBay for Unibody macbook pros. A bit more expensive than his, but I’ve heard several good things about it and it should work with 13″.
have a look at OWC Data Doubler video
can u raid this?
will this work with the 13”
how is your dock in the lower right hand corner?
how do i make it so this is my boot drive and that all my applications are on this, but al the files/documents are on the original drive?
does it void the warranty?
@ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy I’ve read that installing the SSD in the HDD bay and moving HDD to the optical bay is best because the MacBook won’t look at the opitcal bay SATA port when waking from sleep. So if you install the SSD in the optical bay you’ll have troubles waking your MBP from sleep.
Hey Quinn, are there SSDs that are specifically for Macs only? Can I use a normal OCZ or Corsair SSD for my mbp?
I would assume that it’s the other way round coz the original HDD bay has shock protection of some sort, since SSD’s don’t have any moving parts, it’ll be better to keep the original HDD in it’s slot. But I’m not sure whether you can set the 2nd bay as master for running the OS on. I guess we need some expert to explain.
That’s my second question: The whole vibration thing. I’ve been told that it’s best to place the new SSD into the old HDD slot and move the old HDD into the Optical drive slot/section? Why? I’ve also been told that it has something to do with the amount of power that both slots provide. I could be wrong so I’m not stating that any of this is true. Also, does Super Duper only duplicate your system folder or the entire drive?
They use to use Hitachi drives. Those were the best.
I’d like to know too. I’m assuming there is a controller on those caddies. Also, will the original HDD be affected without any vibration protection?
Random Question – How do you feel about the OWC SDD Caddy vs the cheap $16-$24 ebay ones? Have any experience with them? Thanks
They use Hitachi now. Hehe.
Shit dude slow down haha
what about battery life impact?
This isn’t clever mate, swapping the drives. The HDD has moving parts and is closer to the MB, whereas the SSD is still and is located in an area where it has rubber pads, which are useless for an SSD, but crucial to an HDD that causes vibrations to the whole machine. Here it vibrates near the MB and may damage it. Go ahead and swap them, and yes, it matters where you put your SSD and HDD.
of course man go to macsales.com and you will find it
What is that wallpaper?
so just build it in, start the mac with the CD and go? just that simple? 😀 😮
