In this video you will see how to remove the gear box or the lower section of a Mercury outboard. You will also see how to do a complete water pump replacement.
You can find new parts on pretty much any outboard at Crowley marine.com

Thank you for this post! I will be doing this for the first time on a 40 hp Mercury and found your video easy to follow, very detailed, and loaded with good tips like the shift linkage disconnect procedure.
The only other trick I might try before taking the pump housing off is putting a scribe mark between the top surface of the pump housing and the shaft to help make sure the splines are lined up with the flywheel when the lower unit is being put back on.
Thanks a lot. Helps me with my Mercury 50. Very nice video and explanation! Cheers from France. Dan
Did you had a chance to try it a the lake and see if the water came stronger
Thanks for the video, it was very informative. I also need to replace the water pump on my 50 hp merc. What was the part number for the kit you used?
Maybe did but never saw grease spline . Nor did I see you connect water tube.
