reverse…whats going on with that??? what do i have to fix???

jamie johnston says:

Hi,I have a 60 hp EFI BIGFOOT 2003 and it seems ‘tight ‘ to go into
neutral….any ideas what causes this?
New cables done so not that.
Great videos,very straightforward.
cheers.

jahiggins1969 says:

in your video you said to put the shift control into reverse, but i did not
see how you put your lower unit into reverse so they are the same when
putting it back together. how do you put the l/u in reverse?dumb question
probly but i need to know. i dont want to do it wrong. thanks

clarence mullins says:

can you tell me, I have a mercury 500 thunderbolt,50 horse, I have put the
new water pump on and steering cable, and throttle and shift cable, but
when I got it all put back together, pushing forward on the throttle, it
goes to reverse, and the backwards position idles the motor up and in
forward, what did I do wrong?? please help

TheMarineDoctor says:

Look up inside the leg and see if there is an obstruction stopping the
shaft from going into the crank. If there is…the powerhead will have to
be removed and the part put back into place.

Glenda Taylor says:

used our video to replace the water pump. Was a snap, but I have a problem
getting the lower unit mated to the motor. I got it to go in, as my wife
shifted the cable forward and it popped in. But the propeller won’t move in
the direction it drives when operated forward…I’m worried I’ve done
something wrong. I bought the motor at an auction and it started right up,
but I wanted to replace the pump,

leowizbean says:

I have a 150 XR2 and it is really hard to shift above 5200 rpm. Do I have
bad synchros?

sam thesham says:

putting the water tube in first , using a flash light is a good idea. Just
jam it in there. you can see where it goes. the bend in the water tube
should go away from the drive shaft.

chankoism says:

It looks like it’s function is to hold the shift shaft down. It snapped
somehow and now when I try to shift it’ll only stay in forward. What do you
suggest I do to brace it, there’s still a bit of a lip there if I can find
something that’ll fit over the shaft. I would appreciate any suggestions.

nzflynn says:

Hi, Alas the shift shaft “popped up” on the 20hp Mercury I have and you say
it may be a problem to re-align with the cam and it is!!! So whats the next
step now, any help appreciated! cheers

TheMarineDoctor says:

Did you tube come out when you removed the case? If so, use a flashlight to
locate the rubber grommet it slides into…then push it into place. Do this
prior to installing the case.

mike081283 says:

so how you take the gear case apart to get to the insides

gmarinetech says:

Mr. Marine Doctor, What happened to the vertical shift rod? In the first
video when you pull the unit off the shift rod, drive shaft, and water tube
are present.? Right? So where is it when reinstalling the lower unit? Does
that water tube just “hang out” inside the housing or do you connect to
some water passage? Where do you disconnect the shift rod from to pull the
lower unit out? Thanks

James M says:

i see so the tube sould of stayed with the powerhead

TheMarineDoctor says:

You may have missed aligning the shift shaft.

Robert L says:

Thanks, I was worried I had a gear case vent open to the water without the
tube running up. My 200 I bought used just has the white nylon fitting with
the barb section broken off.

curtis haughton says:

any idea how to get a lower unit on a 150hp outboard back on? been working
on it 5hrs non stop took 7 min to get waterpump housing off cannot get it
to line up its a 1979 with the pin on top of the drive shaft? i removed
grease, crank engine over , will not go back up , and its never been in
saltwater , left it in neutral?

TheMarineDoctor says:

Yes, that is correct. It must be placed back in first now.

TheMarineDoctor says:

IF there is any doubt….its best to remove it. Yes you can run it on
premix. Warning system…most did.

Classicboatworks says:

I have a 1964 Merc 650 short shaft and I’m pretty sure needs a full reseal,
it had 1/2 water in the case but it was low so it never busted from
freezing ( not run in 12 years ) and is also leaking the new gear oil that
I put in it,, Is this a difficult job? I have an OEM manual coming but I
have never done more than a gear lube change on a Merc. I have the lower
dropped out and in my vice. It shifts fine and seems to be in great cond
otherwise.. Also, is a Sierra seal kit ok, or should I go OEM?

Tony Camacho says:

hello, I have an 1986 Merc 75HP . Can I remove the auto oiling system and
just add the oil to the fuel my self. I just bought this boat and not sure
if it’s working. Does it have a warning device?

Classicboatworks says:

Thanks, I’ll recheck it to make sure. I think I did spin the prop a few
times but really don’t remember. Air was coming out almost as fast as I
could put it in.

TheMarineDoctor says:

Sierra kit is fine, if one is made for it. Hardest part will be the bearing
carrier retaining the prop shaft. A special tool is used for it. If its not
avail. Two screw drives opposing one another and turn with them. TMD

TheMarineDoctor says:

@gmarinetech The water tube gets pushed into a rubber grommet at the top of
the leg…..if you point a flash light up the leg, you will see where. The
flexible black tube is for a speed line to hook to.

leowizbean says:

@TrampolineKids100 Mercury never made a 50hp with electric shift. That
would be OMC.

rwrw21 says:

I have a 1985 30hp evinrude, just got my new water pump kit and there is
only 1 paper gasket with the steal plate, my seloc says there should be one
under the plate and 1 between the plate and impeller housing. whats the
deal?
