Installing the Face Seal on a Mercury Water Pump

Installing the Face Seal on a Mercury Water Pump

This is part #42 on the gear housing schematic in the Mercury manual (page 6A-10 May 2003). It’s also known as a slinger seal, or centrifugal seal, it’s supposed to keep debris and exhaust gases out of the water pump.

My mechanic did not install the seal the last time I had them replace the impeller, but now that I’m doing things myself I want to do it right…

Perfect info …just what I was looking for. Thanks!

I have this motor, any pointers you can give me? I accidentally broke one of my screws on the housing by over tightening. I also used marine silicone. Do you think I should get the screw drilled out asap? It’s pumping water just fine with three screws holding the housing down.

Mark Whiting says:

Thanks for that. Was wondering what those parts were. My service manual makes no mention of them. 🙂

Lol isn't that just a treat! That piece just helps keep the water pressure up. Thanks for the video, I gave you a like and a sub for actually pulling the lower unit back off and putting that on! And your super close to that 1K! Awesome job man!
