I called my Marine Dealer 4 days ago to inquire about the impeller change.
Those sum-bi&%$^ wanted $475 to do the impeller change to include parts and
labor. I watched your video 4 times, purchased the impeller kit from my
Marine Dealer for $46 and 2 quarts of Gear lube for $11 at Wal-Mart. It
took me 1 1/2 hours to complete with no problems.. Thanks for the great
video and for saving me over $400. You weren’t kidding how cumbersome and
heavy it is to put into position alone.

X-TREMBOATFISHING FISHERMEN says:

Quick question ! The face sea you where talking about that went of the
shaft and in the water pump housing ! Hoes it get pressed inside the
housing or do you just push it down until its flush with the housing ! I
put my seal inside the housing ! There are 2 lips on the seal and the first
lip is inside the housing ! So which is the right way ?

Happy Friday everyone! Here’s a very requested video that I finally got
around to doing, it’s quite long so please enjoy it

How to Replace a Mercruiser Alpha One Gen II Stern Drive Water Pump

6speeddakota . says:

It doesn’t matter when you remove the drive, but you must have it in
FORWARD gear when re-installing it, so do exactly like I did, turn the
shift lever on the case so it faces forward and spin the prop
counterclockwise to lock it into gear, and don’t spin the prop forward, or
you’ll knock it out of gear again. If you need to realign the splines,
twist the prop counterclockwise slightly Also, just to cover all bases,
make sure that it has gear oil in it and you didn’t forget by accident.

Is a Plate-metal triangle

Hey bud, I am a car builder so I know nothing bout that Maxum boat I just
bought, replaced the motor, and tomorrow changing the out drive impeller.
Thanks so much for saving me the 2 hr. Labor bill I would have gotten from
the marine. Great vid and thanks again.

classicoutboards says:

I have the exact same screwdrivers from Snap On, and I love em.

jaxfishattacks says:

6speed – thank you for the video! I have the same exact drive you do – 2006
sea ray 175 sport. I just replaced the impeller. I have it all put back
together now, but when i put the throttle in drive there is a loud clicking
noise! **I think the issue may be with having the throttle in drive, or not
when i pulled the lower off. Please run through exactly where the throttle
is supposed to be before I pull off the lower and how to mate the pair back
up when putting lower back on. Thank You!

Thanks for the video. Very simplistic, easy-to-follow explanation of
everything, I subscribed to your channel because of this. Why not learn
from someone else’s mistakes first, right? 😉 Cheers

ED GLEZ says:

Thank you for your video. I’m working with my unit and after dissemble the
lower unit. a metal triangle (2.5 by 1.3 inches) with 5 small holes came
out. where it should be located?

6speeddakota . says:

I really hope so, you shouldn’t be depressed while using your boat. What
you can do is try run the motor on the flush muffs and look to see if its
pumping water out of the exhaust. If it isn’t then replace the water pump,
you should replace the water pump every few seasons anyway just as a
preventative measure. Best of luck to you and let me know how you make out.
If you have any other questions feel free to message me either on YouTube
or on my Facebook page -6speeddakota

Just did this job today. Couldn’t have done it without this video. Thanks
dude

6speeddakota . says:

I’m not entirely certain, but it sounds to me like the exhaust shutters
have fallen out, if you take it to your marine parts store, the parts guy
should know what it is. They sit in the exhaust elbows and prevent water
from pushing up through the exhaust when you slow down quickly or gun it in
reverse quickly, they are very important. I’d replace both sides if you
have a V6 or V8, the 4 cylinder only has one set of shutters Feel free to
message me if you have any other questions -6speeddakota

Great info. My 2001 Stingray 190 water pump star impeller had never been
replaced, so I thought I had pushed my luck long enough. Last week, I
replaced it but it did NOT need it after 13 summers of lake use; probably
800 hours. The old rubber star looked like new! Gen II’s rubber impeller
is much improved.

Boatman says:

I have searched some for the kit you show in the video, all that I have
found are kits that do not contain the seal setting tool, can you give a
link that has the kit you used? Thank you

ajt0829 says:

6speed…thanks a ton for making this video. This is my first boat and I
was unsure when the impeller had been changed last. Now I have piece of
mind and feel confident to do it again Your video made it a pretty “simple”
job to do. Thanks bud

gogiogo says:

Terrific video! I was depressed until I saw this vid. Long story my engine
temp went to 220 degrees (or more) before I realized it was overheating.
Stupid cup of iced tea in cup holder right in front of my temperature
gauge……and I could not see the gauge. Everyone says the impeller is
suspect. That is where I will start….and this video brought be out of my
deep depression!
