We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows this particular repair. The job would more than likely take a couple of hours to perform. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Great video. The axle and nut on mine are rusted so badly the metal crumbles as I attempt to clean it. I’m afraid if I break that nut loose everything is going to fizzle away to nothing. Any idea how much more work I’m looking at if I have to replace the axle? Thanks. 2003 explorer 4×4

I just ordered my set online (10min ago) from you guys; the process was quick and easy…thank you 1Aauto; plan to get the job done with more confidence now.

The dealer might be able to get one for you.

corey forehand says:

ok theres a seal behind the wheel bearing attached to the cv axle that keeps the dirt and water out from the wheel bearing.it presses onto the the outer cv axl and slides through the steering knuckle where do i find that seal. i cant find it anywhere and its what keeps making my wheel bearing go bad. its like a cv axle output shaft seal or something. please help!!!

1aauto says:

It should take about 45 minutes per side.

DKLYPZ81 says:

Just wondering how long this process takes? I have an ’03 Explorer Sport that’s making some noise and I finally had somebody tell me what the noise was. I’d like to know what I’m getting into for time, thanks 🙂

Great instructional video. Replaced my hubs, pads and rotors in less than an hour per side, piece of cake. Saved a TON of money buying the set of hubs, rotors and pads from 1A. Only thing is that I think this video is for a 4×4. You don’t need the 32mm socket or the gear puller for a 2×4, as there is no axle going through the hub assembly. 1A needs to specify that on this video. Otherwise, I am a customer for life!

This is a great video. I’m going to be doing this job tomorrow. .

HI Timothy, Yes they can get louder. We carry brand new wheel bearing hub assemblies for your 2001 Ford Explorer Sport on our website 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

timothy merritt says:

hi i have a 01 explorer sport i think i need to change my hub assemblydoes the noise get louder as it gets worse

1aauto says:

Either one should work

slnelly452 says:

Would I need a 6 inch puller or an 8 inch?

1aauto says:

You should be able to make the repair just like we did in the video.

slnelly452 says:

So, if you are able to break away the axle from the assembly with a single rap of the hammer, you don’t need the hub puller?

SuperRanger4x4 says:

Is this the same process for a 99 Ford Ranger?

1aauto says:

The wheel bearings in your 96 Ford Explorer are a complete assembly, you would need to replace the entire hub. We carry them on our website 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Austin Reynolds says:

i can feel a vibration coming from the front of my 96 explorer. i think it needs some new wheel bearings. can i replace just the old bearing with new ones or do i have to replace the whole hub assembly?

Hiya! Do you happen to have a video on how to remove the CV Safts for a 97 explorer?

1aauto says:

Thanks for checking us out. Have a great day.

Evan Last says:

Excellent video man! Just bought (2) Timken assemblies for my 97′ 5.0. For you being as professional and knowledgable as you seem, im surprised you aren’t wearing mechanic gloves. I got a nice scar from a ratchet slipping off a lower front shock mount and my thumb hitting the underside of the lower control arm. Split me 4 stitches worth open. Been working on cars since I was 10, never once considered gloves, now they’re in my back pocket or on my hands whenever im wrenching. Good Vid once again!

Unfortunately the torque specs could possibly be different between the Ford/Mercury and the Lincoln body styles. Your best bet would be to try and call a local dealership to see if they can give you the proper spec.

bones0302 says:

Hi, do the same torque specs apply for a 2004 aviator?

thanks!!

1aauto says:

If you’re not using a short socket you could try that, or you could try to loosen and push the axle out of you way to gain some more room. hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Hi there, just wanted to thank you for the great video. I had never done hub bearings before and after watching your video, I was motivated to do it myself. the job for both L and R hub bearings went thru quickly and smoothly thanks to your tips and the list of sockets and tools you provided at the beginning of the video. That list of tools saved me from having to run back and fourth to my toolbox during the install. Thanks again, you have done a great job with this video :0)
