I determined that it’s most likely a short in the connection from the coil to the terminal for cylinder 1. I picked up a new cable for 5 bucks and unfortunately it wasn’t the problem, I still couldn’t get a spark to ground, so I’m going to replace the coil pack and hopefully that will fix the problem.

1aauto says:

It may be a bad plug wire or possibly a bad coil.

I have a 2000 Ford Taurus FFV with the EDIS system. I haven’t found exact specifications, but I’m guessing this is a 3 coil system where each coil fires 2 cylinders. I’m missing a spark on only one cylinder. I’m confused, but I think this means it’s either my spark plug or my wire, right? The back spark plugs are really tough to get to without proper equipment, and just my luck, it’s one of the back ones that’s not drawing a spark.

Are my assumptions correct?

Exact vehicle and tutorial I was looking for, but the problem is I’ve got the DOHC engine in my 2002 Sable. Judging from looking at what I’ve got it looks like something a professional shop would have to do because the coil pack is definitely not located in the same spot as in the video. Engine codes say #3 misfiring when cold and multiple misfires.
You have absolutely the most no BS and informative site for DIY engine repairs. Thank you.

This seemed pretty easy….then I saw that my coil pack was under the manifold. Son of a….

If there is an issue with the plugs or the coil pack, they will show the same signs. Replacing the plugs would be the first step because they are of course the cheapest route.

frsports02 says:

How can i troubleshoot the coil, is there an obvious problem between the plugs or the ignition coil?

1aauto says:

If it’s an automatic you may want to see if the TV cable is adjusted correctly.

danpend says:

I’m getting an electrical type miss that is either the coil or the spark plug wires. However, when the car changes gears from say, second to third, I get this very bad miss and once it changes into third, per se, it stops. But, if I apply enough pedal to get the car to change gears back into the lower gear for more power, it comes back and start missing again. As much as I’ve worked on car myself, I baffled at this one. What’s the chance it could be the tranny? It has 112K miles on it.

1aauto says:

We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows you how to troubleshoot a bad coil. What you can do is start the car up, and spray the wires and coil with some water in a spray bottle. This will show you if the coil or wires are arching out anywhere. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

danpend says:

Thanks for the info. We’ll check that out after the wires are replaced, and the fuel filter as well. Do you have a video on testing the coil to see if it’s bad, or is that something that just happens?

1aauto says:

If the car is missing an tends to have a lot of miles on it, it wouldn’t hurt to change them.

danpend says:

I have a 2006 Taurus SE and at what point should I/do I need to replace to ignition coil? Yes, it’s missing. Plugs have been replaced but not the wires. They’re next and then maybe the coil.

Wowowow that looks so easy!! Thanks for the video, you just saved me over $70 in labor!! 😀

1aauto says:

You may be referring to the coil pack.

Zizo MB says:

What do you call the one is attached to to the coil from the bottom. Where the spark plugs are?

Thank you 🙂

1aauto says:

It wouldn’t hurt. It’s always good practice to disconnect it when working around the motor.

joedahoe313 says:

Does the battery need to be disconnected before starting this procedure?

1aauto says:

If there’s a check engine light on you may want to have the computer scanned to see if there are any stored codes. It could also be a gas issue, you could try to change the fuel filter if you haven’t already tried that.

Nash Copeland says:

@1aauto I just replaced this part a day ago to fix a misfire (after already replacing the spark plugs and wires) and it runs smooth now but it didn’t turn over the second time I tried driving it. Is this a problem or will this not happen again? Thanks 1a auto!

1aauto says:

Yes is would be the same process.
