You may want to check the level of the transmission fluid to see if it’s at it’s correct level. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

I have a 1998 4×4 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC but the reverse doesn’t work and when I put the switch on 4×4 low I hear a clunking noise every few seconds and it doesn’t go into low. I have all gears except reverse in Auto or 4×4 High. Do you think I need a new Transfer Case Shift Motor? Thanks for the vid!

Jake Roberts says:

Good way to install and replace 4*4 transfer case shift motor ford explorer mercury.

1aauto says:

That knocking noise is extremely bad for the engine. That means something inside is misfiring. You need to have that looked at immediately or you could risk destroying the entire engine.

Chris Brown says:

I have a 98 Mecury mountaineer, when i accelerate or go after a stop it gives me a knock coming from the engine! what is it?

Unicyclist357 says:

Thanks, I got it, it was in the right position, just a tight fit.

1aauto says:

Normally you can rotate it with a pair of pliers to the correct position.

Unicyclist357 says:

I am trying to put my shift motor back on, and it won’t fit back over the triangular piece which it rotates. I have checked that they are oriented properly, do you have any suggestions? Thanks

Do all the wire colors match upwith each other on both sides of the plugs? Someone has previously attempted this on mine and I want to make sure the wiring is correct. It looks like they broke a couple of pins and then wired them direct.

1aauto says:

If you have a check engine light on you may want to pull the code to see what the code is pointing to. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Help please, my 2001 Ford Escape just stopped and will not move in drive when place in drive mode. It will go into reverse with not problem. I thought it has something to do with me having the gear shift replaced on the transmission and not being repaired properly. Not sue! Please help.

1aauto says:

The light should indicate if you are. You may also feel the front pull or grab while taking turns.

John Riddle says:

where is the 4 wheel drive actuator located on 1998 ford explorer

Ethan Minney says:

Most likely it is a vacuum leak. Check the rubber hoses around then intake manifold area for rubber parts that are splitting or deteriorate in your hand. A smoke test would work best to confirm vacuum leaks but are expensive to purchase.

1aauto says:

It could be a bad actuator.

John Riddle says:

i have a 1998 ford explorer my 4wd kicks in and out would you happen to know what that could be ?

1aauto says:

You may want to check the EGR valve to see if it’s working correctly. Also if there’s a check engine light on, pull the code to see what’s causing it to go off.

i had to do the same thing on my 01 ranger (basically the same) in my case the 4wd would test good in the bulb test on start up and then the next day not. the problem was the switches inside the aluminum housing (like a wiper motor) went bad. works great now… let me know if thats a “normal failure” guys….
