1978 Mercury Grand Marquis oil pressure sending unit repair

I had to replace the oil pressure sending unit due to a leak. Also I removed the valve covers and checked out the pushrods.

i use 20-50 oil in my old cars to thats gd oil 4 these old engines it has
good thickness even wen oil gets hot

KMScarboy says:

i would probably tighten that rocker if i were you…im sure it has a
certain torque spec that it should be tightened to…any service manual for
that car should have it…i would check the other rockers as long as i was
at it too…

retrochad says:

How long since the oil was changed on your truck? I know also on my 1974
GMC bus there was lifter noise and an oil change and filter cured it. You
might try some Marvel mystery oil mixed in with the oil, and then change
the oil and filter.

hey chad – I have a 2000 Grand Marquise – my hubby is attempting to change
out the timing belt – the problem is we can’t get the right valve cover off
– any suggestions?

Devin2277 says:

She sounds pretty good. I think there’s a way to tighten the rocker arms so
their not so loose. But I’m not sure. That was pretty neat seeing the valve
train with the covers off and the engine running.

pickupman1995 says:

I love huge cars 🙂 What engine does it have?

starlite2991 says:

Chad you need to have the valves adjusted on the passanger side.

rompn4x says:

Man if you poured some seafoam cleaner down the carb, choke off the engine,
wait 20 minutes and fire it up you would blow out so much smoke from all
the carbon removed and burning

TheTarrMan says:

I believe the rockers should not have any play at all. Check to make sure
the blot’s are tight, and make sure the push rod’s aren’t bent.

retrochad says:

I know what you mean….still haven’t found the original one I bought
though. This time I took the tool box out to the car and put every single
thing away right after I was done!

1944johndeerel says:

did you ever fix that old ford air compressor?

wilkes85 says:

Oh man that old spark plug was NASTY! I should really replace mine… my
engine is starting to run like crap, and I know it’s because of the antique
spark plugs in it lol

TheCubanMan728 says:

lol, i meant Trunk*

kjm1983 says:

The plungers inside the lifters are likely needing all the oil pressure
they can get to still keep the valvetrain tight, so when the oil got low it
probably caused them to clatter. Just a “live with it” thing, nothing that
will kill it.

AllAmericanFiveRadio says:

Now that you have no need for the original Oil Pressure Switch Socket,
Murphy will put it back.

Madness832 says:

Have a locksmith make a key, perhaps?

aybesee123 says:

I bought a 78 Marquis….they didnt give me the trunk key either.

lawnking168 says:

hey chad. i like your idea about the pbc blaster. i am working on a 81
dodge pickup with a 318, and it dont have a rocker prob. but it was sitting
for awhile. the lifters make some noise. i’m thinking that may help. now
that i got it running, it dont make the noise so much. i am also replacing
the covers and gaskets. i found a vintage pair of mt cast alum. covers to
help with the leakage. i also think that the rockers shold not have any
play as well. i’ll check mine. any thoughts?? thanks!

retrochad says:

Not yet but I will! I’m thinking I have a bad cable from the coil to the
distributor.

lawnking168 says:

i forgot using marvel oil. that is a great idea!! i changed the oil about 3
months ago. but i don’t want to change it untill i finish the work on the
valve covers. i know that i will be cleaning up the heads when i get the
covers off!! again, thanks for all you vidios!! don’t know where you find
all this stuff!! keep them coming!!! thanks!! i’ll let you know how it
comes out!!

67tr876 says:

looks great ! man

Gabriel Mejia says:

have you considered torquing down the rocker arm bolts?

BBISHOPPCM's World says:

Sounds like one or more faulty hydraulic lifters…

kjm1983 says:

Chad, that engine is very elderly, so I would be quite proud that it runs
as good as it does if I were you 🙂 It probably has worn valve seats, worn
timing chain that’s making the ignition timing bounce around a lot, worn
oil pump, worn rings..lol..so no excuses necessary!

Robert DeMaio says:

your cat has approved this car before the other didn’t care much for the
bus..

choppincrop29 says:

i had an oil leak on a 84 buick regal 3.8 motor and it was the oil pressure
switch.thank you this post helped me out alot

retrochad says:

Thanks! It is a 400 CID.

retrochad says:

Would you recommend an overhaul of this engine at all or might it be better
to go with a new long block? This is about the best the engine has
performed the whole time I have owned it. It always starts up and keeps
going down the road but I just worry about it developing more problems
being so worn out.

1944johndeerel says:

if thats truely all thats wrong thats an easy fix as you know! i hope thats
it!

TheCubanMan728 says:

Change the lock on the truck, so you actually have a key to get into the
trunk.

AllAmericanFiveRadio says:

I should not volunteer this information but I had two transistor globe
radios. I decided to give one to friend and now I can’t find the one I
have. I would like to take the batteries out of it. That Murphy better not
get in front of my Blazer.
