Now I’m to the point of working in the rain, hence the umbrella. Owner of this boat’s father decided to wire the magneto wires to the battery, a no no in the…

How do you wire the magneto? I have one I need to know how to wire

cpgixxer says:

@91yotapick from memory- the mag on this motor had 2 black wires coming
from it, 1 from each breaker- all you need to do is wire the 2 black wires
to a switch that shorts when closed, once the 2 black wires are shorted it
will kill the motor, DO NOT wire these to power, you will blow the coils.

cpgixxer says:

@91yotapick Awesome!!!! make sure they are ethenol resistant fuel lines.
Replace them all while you are at it. Post a vid…..

91yotapick says:

I have another question for you. On my outboard the tell tale stream dose
not work I tried to put a pick in there but it feels like some thing hard.
Has water flowing through the motor but no stream

cpgixxer says:

@91yotapick The magneto generates it’s own power, all the battery does if
your motor uses one is run the starter. They are totally self contained.
You might have another wire for the electric choke but that’s it. Under the
flywheel should be 2 points, 2 condensors and 2 coils.

cpgixxer says:

@91yotapick Uh ya, power on those black wires makes for a pretty wicked
smoke show. If you haven’t got spark pull the flywheel and have a look.
Dirty points are usually the first culprit, the second is cracked coils.
Try cleaning the points and setting the gap to .020 with a feeler gauge
when each point is open at the high point of the cam lobe.

Thanks for all the help just got it running about an hour ago. I rebuilt it
I just had no idea about the magneto. Just needs a new fuel line it has pin
hole so it losses it’s prim. But it runs 🙂

cpgixxer says:

@91yotapick You probably have a blockage in the tube or where the tube
connects at the the block. Pull the tube from the block and try running
compressed air , if it flows it could be at the fitting, weedeater line
works well for shoving into tubes and fittings. If that’s not it and you
are sure it’s pumping it could be a blockage in the water jacket which
would require you to remove it. Could be a bad impeller from sitting.

91yotapick says:

How dose the magneto get power then? I am new to the hole magneto deal. My
motor is a 1961 merc 350 40 hp. So it might be a little different.

91yotapick says:

Thanks a lot you probably just saved me a lot of money. I almost did what
the other person did. I will post a video of mine when I get it running.
