meter ring.

anton are says:

edda520,thank you so much for sharing this video with us now im wondering
if u could help me out by giving me the name of the junkyards in ga where i
could find this c230 thanks you..

edda520 says:

My steering wheel is fixed. Got it out without any trouble. Make sure you
disconnect the battery first, though.

John Anderson says:

Hi Edda, did you ever find what your problem was with your instrument
cluster failure ,i have the same problem and don t want to spend money on a
panal if the problem is going to remain. regards frankie, email–

edda520 says:

Mine turned out to be a blown fuse. On my C230, the dash and brake lights
share the same fuse. Once i replaced it, everything came back to
life…until I stepped on the brake and the fuse blew again. Turned out a
metal plate behind one of the tail lights came loose and had moved up
against one of the brake light terminals. Moved it back and all was well.

edda520 says:

@frezze212 The fuse is under the hood. I have a video showing me replacing
it. The metal plate is a backing for the tail light. It’s supposed to be
held in with some plastic posts melted to form rivets, but they didn’t do a
good job on mine and the plate moved over and shorted the tail light bulb.
First time I replaced the fuse, the dash cluster came to life until I hit
the brakes and then it died again. Pulling the tail light assembly and
moving the plate back to where it should be fixed it.

amgjens says:

do you know how i can remove the standard radio without the mercedes tools?

Rengga Marsello says:

hi @edda520 , i have C200 (w202) and a few days ago, on the dashboard
lights and speedometer went out. Speedometer needle OFF, Gas Needle Off,
Temperature Needle OFF. is this because an internal short circuit in the
instrument cluster? Cheers! Rengga Jakarta

ryan b says:

I have a 1993 mercedes 300SD all of a sudden the odometer stopped working.
I was curious, do I need to replace the whole cluster? or is it a gear that
I need to replace? Everything else works fine, but its just the trip, and
odometer that have stopped working. Mine isn’t electronic, but more of the
roll as you go style. Any advice would be great on what to do.

edda520 says:

@amgjens Crutchfield has the removal tool for a couple of dollars. I bought
some (two in a pack) and it made taking the radio out easy.

edda520 says:

@frezze212 Turned out to be a blown fuse. The instrument cluster and the
brake lights are on the same circuit. A metal plate on the back of one of
the tail light assemblies had shifted, shorted out against a brake light
and the dash cluster went dead. I fixed the fuse, but it would blow when I
put on the brakes. finally found the loose metal plate. Put it back in
place, put another fuse in and all was fine.

edda520 says:

When I bought the car, it had a dead factory cassette radio. I bought a
Panasonic from Crutchfield which came with an adapter that plugged into the
Benz wiring harness. All in all an easy swap. By the way, the factory radio
was dead because it had a blown fuse on the back of it. Weird place for a
fuse, but no big deal because the radio was a dinosaur anyway.

edda520 says:

@320bit I can’t find the link now, but there are LED bulbs you can get to
replace the old-school incandescent bulbs. Someone out there has ones you
can buy already in those little blue holders.

320bit says:

So swapping your cluster panel gave you the milage from whatever car it
came from? If so, thats odd. I always thought the milage was recorded
within the ECU then displayed on the newer models? It would make more sense
that way anyway. If you know how to remove the light switch module could
you make a video? Im trying to get mine out but cant figure it out. Im
assuming you have to remove the screw behind the rotory switch but not sure
if I have a socket for it.

roof wont release on my 1993 Mercedes 380SL

Michael Schön says:

Is it the same, if I want to remove the speedometer in a W210? Some lights
are crushed, half of the instruments are without background light.

anton are says:

@edda520 thank you for yor time…

Finn Renard says:

Hi Edda. Is your steering wheel fixed or adjustable? Mine is fixed, it
would be nice to know that I *do not* have to remove the airbag+wheel to
get the cluster out. All forum posts I have read, say that only on w202s
with adjustable steering wheel, the cluster can be removed without removing
airbag+wheel.

320bit says:

@edda520 Do you know how easy it would be to replace the lights in the
cluster with something a bit newer and more “inviting”? Im getting tired of
the 80s yellow, it really annoys me. I want a blueish color.

Seal00754 says:

I tried to enter the link it would not work, the circuit is down you can
try a silver pen although this has a resistance sometimes.

edda520 says:

@antlaura2002 I just went through the file folder for the car and can’t
find the receipt for the cluster. That was over a year ago, so no guarantee
the car’s still at the salvage yard. It was a small place up outside the
perimeter. I’ll keep looking and let you know if I come across it. Sorry.

edda520 says:

@antlaura2002 I just did a search on Craigslist under Car Parts and it came
up. Just tried again and don’t see anything. Can’t remember the name of the
place, but if I can find the receipt, I’ll get back to you. Will look
later today.

AutoXpressTech1 says:

mileage is stored in both the cluster and ecu in some cars, the highest
mileage will prevail. We can repair most issues on these clusters from the
gauges inoperative or intermittent to the displays out or missing pixels.
see autoxpresstech.

edda520 says:

I don’t know a thing about that model/instrument cluster, however I did a
search in Ask dot com and I think found the diagnostics and fix for yours.
YouTube won’t let me post the link, but use Mercedes Benz 300sd Speedometer
Impulse Transmitter as the search term and you should find it.

edda520 says:

@AutoXpressTech1 Well, crap. I just tossed the old one.

edda520 says:

I learned the hard way that if you don’t disconnect the battery, you can
fry the electronics in the dashboard. I managed to cook the old one taking
it in and out with the battery attached.
