The trick to adding refrigerant to the high-side is that you do it BEFORE
you start the car and turn on the AC. Personally, with the engine off I
would add vapor to both the high and low side of the system… Then when it
stops rushing in, turn OFF the high side, start the engine and turn on the
AC letting the refrigerant flow in from the low side. NEVER open the high
side on the gauges when the compressor running because you might blow-up a
can… besides the high side is higher than the pressure in the can &&
liquid, so it wouldn’t work adding it anyway. Also, NEVER add liquid to
the low side (i.e. keep the can right-side up or rather top-side up)

I have the same vehicle. My discharge ( high side ) line started leaking
oil so I have to replace that. Would it be a good idea to replace the drier
as well?

Shop manual states to add to the high side until low side reaches 14psi,
check for leaks and if all is good to add 8oz through the high side with
the compressor off. Will the vacuum pulled on the system be able to suck in
that much?

R-134a was the factory fill, propane for about a week. It’s an 06 ‘vic. I
didn’t need to adjust the low pressure sensor since it is good down to 21
psi, but was wondering if I needed to. Or… something else I should know?
🙂 It’s filled with PAG 46 if that helps (factory recommended weight).

I have some actual freon here , I love to tell someone it costs $65 bucks a
can that gets their gums a flapping quick , being it’s R12 , and they get a
school lesson on what is , and isn’t , it’s funny how a dupont brand name
became so loosely used like a lot lizard lol , kinda like all sodas being
called a “coke” being I work for Pepsi , that one ticks me off too lol

towrecker says:

nope , you are good , it was the pressure switch I was thinking about , but
yours is fine as it is , as for oil , yup , you nailed that one too , just
enjoy cold air , and don’t worry about it lol

towrecker says:

what was the orig refrigerant in the system ? if R12 I have nothing to say
, if it was R134 I do , I know you most likely told me , but lets face it ,
I friggin forgot lmao

im a novice. come help with caddy!

towrecker says:

actually I have shot this car before , I have also gotten pissed and shot
mater in years past …I have a nasty habbit of shooting cars when they
piss me off …I hate this mazda so bad that I might torch that bastard one
day , and video it !!!

hopper1 says:

Also, thanks for not calling it “Freon.” That’s a huge pet peeve of mine 😉

towrecker says:

you just attach the short hose of the thing to the system , and crack the
1/4 turn valve for a second to flow a bit of refrigerant through it …it
was actually not very expensive , it was the 2nd best a/c investment I ever
made , the first and best was those rubber baby buggy bumpers around my
manifold gauges , those keep you from whacking a hood and busting the lens
off of them , I am sure you have done that before , tends to make one ill
when that happens lol

towrecker says:

oh yeah , you have a good point there ! I have a little test kit that will
tell me if it is a hydrocarbon (propane based) , has a sealer , or a dye in
the system , it is just a little glass and aluminium thing with little
inserts that are like litmus paper that show colors to identify the stuff ,
being that my portable reclaimer / recycler cost me $2,200 , one has to be
careful , sealer actually jelled the oil in the compressor of my old
robinair unit a few years back , I was pissed !

tomduncan1970 says:

Thanks for the lesson… you da man buddy!

towrecker says:

it’s more like OH NO !!! that is if your working on it ;p lol

towrecker says:

your first step on caddy is to see if the compressor is good , or just have
it remaned …I would convert it to an A6 , and make it easier , as that
monster is just that a dinosaur , heavy, power robbing , and inefficient as
heck lol

hopper1 says:

There’s a reason the little 1lb cans only come with a low side connection.
At least in the “Do it yourself. As seen on TV!” kits. I would also like to
add some advice for the shade trees out there. If you put sealer into your
A/C system (not recommended) and then have A/C service done at a shop,
please, please, please tell the shop you put sealer in the system. That
junk will clog our (very expensive) machines.

towrecker says:

tell my girlfriend thanks for the naked pictures …if you can call them
that , I always thought when a lady send a man naked pictures , she sent
pictures of herself , and not just a picture of the clothes she took off 😉
ha ha ha , tell her I love her , and she will always be my little jailbird
😉 and this was not a lesson , remember I said DON’T do it ha ha ha

Hey towrecker, thanks for the advice on R-152a. I put that in a month ago
and I’ve put a few thousand miles on the car since in extra hot weather.
Works like a charm. Use a pressure temp chart so I could get it absolutely
perfect. No icing up and always some nice dew on the evaporator lines. No
more using any ghetto propane shit in my system. Replaced the orifice tube
and did a ghetto flush on the condenser and evaporator with a couple of
cans of brake cleaner and some serious compressed air.
