How to fix Tension; Don’t Panic!

How to fix Tension; Don’t Panic!

I admit I’m mostly a self taught seamstress, but I’ve relived my burdens of dealing with bad tension many of times, (on my sewing machine that is) tension in…

Sorry but all machines are not set up just like yours. The tension case is
normally the last thing you check, the needle tension or the top thread
tension is the first thing I check and then make sure the bobbin case area
is clean and lint free and the bobbin in the case correctly, It can be
several things causing the problem not always the tension adjustments, for
example the thread, fabric, needle or just a simple thing as is the machine
is threaded correctly. I have sewn for about 55 yrs so I am not a
repairman but my repairman from way back taught me a lot to check before I
stated turning knobs and screws and that has saved me a lot of frustration.
I am sure your info has helped some.

Trish Hanna says:

General rules of tighter and looser tensions for lighter and heavier weight
fabrics would have been helpful.

cathy darby says:

Did time stand still while Captain obvious explained this.

Maryann Mullenbach says:

I was having problems with loops on the underside of my sewing.
Unfortunately, this video does not give any instruction on what to do in
this situation- I was looking for info on if the top thread tension or the
bobbin tension needed to be adjusted.

Yael L. Berman says:

Awesome, thanks!

I need to learn patience when figuring out tension. I’m new to sewing and
been getting frustrated easy. I messed with tension, changed needle and
that didn’t work. Come to find out I was using the wrong thread for the
fabric. When I changed the thread my tension problems ended. Great video!

This helped me so much! I didn’t know what was happening or how fix it.
This tutorial helped find the tension dial on my machine (was handed down
to me) and gave me a guide on what an average tension number should be.
I’m a 7!!! 🙂 my bobbin is fine so I don’t want to touch it. lol Thanks a
bunch for making this video!

so THAT’S what that dial does! Thank you so much for this video, very very
helpful for me and my modest sewing skills. I was so sad that my thread was
jamming. Now it is making lovely stitches again! yay

Bluwhodesign says:

@SandersinCali Have you tried cleaning your machine and maybe some oil too,
depending on the age? It made a world of difference for me I couldn’t even
get my tension to mess up for quite a few months after I made the cleaning
video. Also fixing the tension is like using the clutch on a car it takes
being really calm and lots of Patience, which is of course the last thing
you feel after something goes wrong with your machine. Last resort is
taking it to the Sew and Vac shop for a tune up.

Bluwhodesign says:

@9465787 Btw the bobbin and bobbin case are rarely ever the problem,
usually it’s the upper tension that’s off and it takes a good deal of
patience to fix. Best of luck

Angie Barbarian says:

Thanks very much…I had my main tension WAY TOO LOW.

peachcloverlauper says:

Will the thickness of the material matter when setting the tension? I’m
trying to use thick faux fur.

Dave Burrows says:

If you thread w/ the presser foot in the down position, then threading
between the tension discs, as well as pulling more length through will be
more difficult. If you try to pull the thread after passing through the
needle, the needle can be bent. For these & other reasons, the general
practice is to thread w/ the presser foot up. If the foot us raised & the
upper thread is still very tight, check your threading &/or reduce tension
by moving towards the next smaller number in tiny steps.

thank you for posting this. I am a beginer so this this HELPS out alot!

denise m says:

ok, ill try that. thank you very much! 🙂

MicheleMidnight says:

ha ha ha you are too cute for words! i just have to make tons of money and
hire you to help me make things to wear on stage!

Bluwhodesign says:

not necessarily, I’d try fixing the top tension first cause it’s pulling to
much from the top, also lint could be messing with the bobbin cleaning the
lint out is really important., I save the bobbin for last after trying
everything else including one thing I seem to have left out rethreading the
top and bottom first.

Myra Thomas says:

When the presser foot is down the thread (cotton) should NOT pull easily
from the needle. To do that the presser foot should be UP. If you meant the
thread & fabric aren’t pulling easily then be sure the needle and thread up
take lever are at their highest positions BEFORE trying to pull the fabric
and thread out from the sewing machine rotate the hand wheel TOWARDS you by
hand to adjust the needle and lever heights.

SandersinCali says:

I have tried every combination of upper and lower tension and it never made
a difference! It was still pulling the bobbin thread through the top
fabric!

miloradovexit says:

Thank you! Lifesaver!

joem5643 says:

Thank you for posting this video I was going to throw my machine out till I
adjusted it using your help from this video.

Bluwhodesign says:

yes very much, I’d set it first to an quilter thickness cotton, then adjust
(go up in tension numbers to loosen) for the fur as needed. FYI try to
avoid sewing more than two layers of the fur at a time, because it’s very
thick material.

TamarinTorpedo says:

this was quite helpful! thanks i’ve had such a huge problem getting the
tension on my machine right, i always thought it was the bobbin case but it
probably isn’t!

Carolynleona says:

I’m a beginner and am having this problem now. I changed the tension on the
bobbin and I’m hoping it helps. I ended up putting my sewing machine away,
though, because if it didn’t help, I’ll get really discouraged. lol Wish
you lived near me, too.

guns1212 says:

Thank you, i was ready to drop kick my machine!

silverflamed3 says:

I followed your instructions, and it fixed the problem!

Bluwhodesign says:

@9465787 I can’t really say without being able to see it, it would be the
bobbin case and not the bobbin it’s self and tightening all the way isn’t
really the solution it may need to be loosened it’s just a matter of
tension not too tight and not too loose somewhere in the middle there are
some good videos I’ve seen here on YT on just how to do this correctly like
by hanging the bobbin case holding it by the thread shake it a bit and it
should let go only about an inch or 2 of thread at a time
