How To Replace 2010 – 2015 Lexus RX350 Trunk Power Liftgate Motor

How To Replace 2010 – 2015 Lexus RX350 Trunk Power Liftgate Motor

Hey y’all, I bought this 2013 RX350 with 156,000 miles on it, it runs like a dream still with just a few small issues. I just replacement all the door lock motors a week ago and now the power liftgate motor. It occasionally lifted the trunk up, but most of the time I just got a long beep with no movement of the trunk lid. The trunk would unlock and lock, but that’s about it. I purchased this new motor off of Rock Auto. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=5802159&cc=3001020&jsn=823

Found a cheaper version:

Things I needed for the job
– Plastic pry tools from Amazon
– 10 mm socket
– Socket extender

It took us about 2 hours, but that was because we didn’t know what we were doing at first. It’ll probably take you about an hour.

4. Remove motor foam piece 4:17
5. Remove the two bolts on the right side of the motor 5:07
6. Unhook wiring harness connector 5:39
7. Loosen black lower side panel 7:25
8. Remove white side panel 7:10 and 8:10
9. Remove the rear left bolt that is holding the single holed motor mount to the body of the vehicle 8:35
10. Remove the two front left bolts that is holding the double holed motor mount to the body of the vehicle 8:53
11. Slide motor back and off the little slot that its in 9:10
12. Slide new motor into mounting hole with the brackets bolted onto the motor. 9:45
13. Plug in connector to motor.
14. Put the bolts back in. 10:00
15. Align and bolt back the trunk hinge to the lid. 10:18
16. Test motor. My car did a double beep at first, but I manually closed the trunk and that put it back into automatic mode. 10:35
17. Put everything back, tighten bolts, align all the paneling, PUT THE FOAM PIECE BACK, it took us a few tries to align the side panel, that’s why you see us going at it for a while. 11:08
18. Test all the buttons, dash, key fob, trunk lid. 13:07

Thanks for the video. I have been going without the door mechanism working in my 2013 RX 350 for the last 5 years. With your help I got the job done in about 25 minutes.

I've been trying to buy a used 2013 RX350 for my college bound daughter…but no luck…everyone wants 19k plus and most are beat on or 100k plus miles…best one was the Lexus dealer…2012, bald tires, no gas in the car (can't test drive), chipped windshield, air bag warning light one, severe vibration on highway (from their maint. dept. when they gave it a safety check prior to putting on lot)…too bad…car interior was spotless and exterior pretty nice too…

Great job. Thank you!

THANK YOU! Had the exact same thing on my 2012 RX350. Non-dealer quote to fix was $1400. Got the part for $440 shipped and did the repair per your video. I couldn’t get the bolt off by the airbag so I took the nut off and just forced that bolt up and back while pressing down on the bracket. That was probably the hardest part of this repair.

Thank you for the video. I have the same car in Thailand and we've had this problem on and off as well.

twashington4 says:

Thank God they changed this design on the 2016 model. It just has powered shocks.

Having the exact same issue with my 2015 RX 450h. Also intermittently decides to work, but most of the time it works exactly as you demonstrated. Looks like replacement will be needed.

Haha that stare at 12:15 — made me almost spit out my drink, I didn't expect that. Fun people

Thanks Great video. My 2013 does the same thing. I suspected it was the problem. I'm going to replace mine when i have some time. thanks again.

Cooking with Mon says:

Awesome! You saved a ton of money from having Lexus replaced your trunk motor. Hoe much was the motor?

John Yin says:

where you bought this parts , How much?

john Eisel says:

Good job man !

Mervin Mc Knight says:

where did you purchase the tail gate motor?

Great Chinedu says:

Where did you get the diagram for the liftgate motor

Mike says:

wondering if you can just buy the motor and replace it instead of the whole assembly. Maybe cheaper.

Peepers 47 says:

Brave dude! Fascinating to see how the lift works.

Edwin Mercado says:

Thanks for the video. I will be making this my project during the next few week. My 2012 is sporadically opening and closing, so I have to guess it is in fact that motor. Did your header and other parts experience any broken clips?
