DIY Install Land Rover Discovery 2 APT Slider Diff Guard – Front

Hi Guys, Ben Woodgate from APT. The Land Rover Discovery 2 Slider Diff Guard, it’s an essential bit of kit. Tinkering with you truck is a ton of fun. Let’s crawl underneath and install this slider diff guard. The APT Land Rover Discovery 2 Slider Diff Guard design provides you with rock solid impact protection for both your front and rear diffs as well as the added bonus as acting as a skid for the track rod. New premium quality fixings are provided with the kit so all you need are a couple of hand tools and you are on your way. So what do you get? 6mm 350 grade steel slider to encapsulate the front diff. You get a 3mm 350 grade connection plate to tie the top of the diff guard to the diff for even better strength. New high tensile BSF bolts for under the diff and a high quality 8mm fixing bolt for the link at the top. The APT Discovery 2 Slider Diff Guard uses the factory fixing points so no modifications are required and all the fixing are supplied with it to make the job easy. It’s time to install, let go underneath the truck and get into it. To start with the install were are going to the back of the diff and we’re going to remove the upper most bolt and the bolt to the right of that. To do this we will need a 13mm socket. Now that we have removed the bolts, we are going to reinstall the bolts with the top retainer in place this time. So we pop it in position and grab our bolts and like with all installations we loosely start them first… with the two bolts loosely started now we can turn our attention to the slider itself. To install the slider we are going to be using the two factory fitment holes on the underside of the diff. Now it’s time to put the slider in its place. Pop the rear over, slide the front up, wiggle it across and with the use of a 15mm socket we will start these two BSF bolts. Nice and loose gives us a bit of jiggle room so we can get that front bolt started. Now because we have the slider nice and loose and the top connecting plate nice and loose we can jiggle them around so we can start the final connecting bolt. Bolt goes in and then we start the nut. Before we go to the tightening sequence we should have something that resembles this. The first step in the tightening sequence are the two bolts at the top of the diff – we will tighten those first. Now that the two top bolts are nice and tight we will move our attention to the two bottom side bolts. To tighten this properly in position you want to grab the front face and pull it as far rear as possible and then tighten the bolts. That way you get maximum clearance for your track rod. Double check yourself. And then tension the bolts off. Now for the final bolt at the front. Now with the use of two 13mm we will tighten this final connecting bolt at the top. And there we go. Alright now, you know when it’s fitted properly because it doesn’t rattle or shake, all bolts are tight and you have full access to both your filler hole and your drain plug. Well there it is. Essential diff protection done in your driveway at home. I’m Ben from APT if you have any questions email or call me. Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing you out on the tracks. Great tutorial, looks like your APT guard is a rip off of the QT diff guards, exact copies all bar the lazer cut branding, would have been nice for you to explain that you dispensed with the harmonic dampner off the front axle, an explanation of the after effects of it's removal would have been nice or make your diff guard compatible with retaining the dampner.

One little extra tip.  Check all the diff bolts while you are there as I found a few of mine had worked loose in 250,000 Km.  Great tutorial Ben.
