Some owners of Hyundai/Kia products are up in arms about oil — and not the price of it on the world’s markets. A cadre of eight people in America, ranging in location from California to Texas to Massachusetts, have brought forth a class-action lawsuit earlier this year alleging the engines in certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles consume inordinate amounts of oil. At issue is the apparent need to add engine oil more frequently than the owner’s manual suggests, plus the allegation that some of the wayward oil finds its way into other parts of the vehicle’s gubbins to cause extra damage.

As per the suit, filed by Nye Stirling Hale And Miller; Sauder Schelkopf LLC and Walsh PLLC, plaintiffs contend the defendants “concealed and failed to address” a known manufacturing defect that results in excessive engine oil consumption and can lead to engine stalling and failure. Plaintiffs say that overfilling the engine with oil isn’t a good solution since the chance exists of submerging the crankshaft, a situation which could foam the oil and reduce lubrication. There’s also the issue of extra oil potentially putting undue strain on gaskets and the like.

Elsewhere in this neck of the woods, Hyundai recently expanded an existing recall by over 150,000 vehicles in Canada due to potential problems which could pose a fire risk or lead to the engine suddenly losing power. That defect could be linked to worn connecting rod bearings.

If you’re seeking for a text of the new class-action suit in its entirety, it can be found by searching Cho et al v. Hyundai Motor Company, Ltd. et al. or the clinically impersonal file name of 8:22-cv-00448.

There are a wide variety of Hyundai and Kia models named in the suit, some going back so far as 2009. According to the suit, cars with the allegedly faulty engines include:

2012-2020 Hyundai Elantra
2009-2018 Hyundai Genesis Coupe
2019-2021 Hyundai Kona
2020-2021 Hyundai Palisade

The Faith Factor says:

Hi Carl. This doesn't have anything to do with this video but I am reaching out to you about the Kia Engine recalls. I have a 2016 Kia Soul that is right now as I am typing this getting the the Engine repaired due to meeting the qualifications for the recall.

However my damaged catalytic converter didn't qualify because they said I was out of warranty. The reason I am contacting you is because you have a large platform and will be able to get the word out to others.

1. Some people qualify for Engine replacement solely off the extended warranty of the current recall. This applies to people who type in their VIN # but their specific VIN # is not tied to any recalls. When this happens they can only get an extended warranty (if one is being offered) for their specific vehicle's year, make and model. In this particular situation with the Kia Engines; the engine has an extended warranty but the catalytic converter doesn't. So the Kia dealerships parts and service manager will have to contact the manufacturer on your behalf and request a "goodwill" approval for the affected part not covered under extended warranty.

2. In contrast, If you type in your VIN # and YOUR specific VIN# does come up as being part of the recall itself. Then the recall will supercede any warranty (whether you have one or not) for both the catalytic converter and the engine, because the recall never expires and it supercedes the warranty ONLY IF YOUR SPECIFIC VIN NUMBER IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECALL

3. Because I fell in the first category the dealership that is repairing my vehicle got the ball rolling on requesting the goodwill repair for my Cat. I also reached out to the NHTSA who told me to submit a safety complaint about the KSDS fix not actually stopping the Catalytic converter from failing. They said the more people we can get to complain about the KSDS fix not working, then the NHTSA can put pressure on the manufacturer to ALSO issue an extended lifetime warranty for the catalytic converter as well. Please add This information to your future updates.

I will keep you posted as to whether or not I got the goodwill repair

Hi mate, thanks for helping everyone just a quick one do you know if that applies only in the US? TNX

ADC Cars says:

Its crazy kia is still having these issues. Basically they cannot build a 4 banger. At least with older hondas or Toyotas if you keep adding oil the car will run for a long time. Buying a kia is like throwing your hard earned money in the garbage.

CS Lee says:

anyone had their engine replaced and then P0420 catalytic converter efficienye issue

Michael Lyons says:

The main point is NEVER BUY A KIA OR HYUNDAI.

ktru says:

What about if you never got the ksds upgrade? Can you still get the engine?

Bernie Quasaar's movies. says:

Kia /Hyundai = Never buy. Scumbag dealerships

ERIC SYLVESTER says:

This is true. Brand new engine and no issues. It is what it is. I’ve worked on all makes. All vehicles are crap. Just depends on how it’s taken care of. All cars have recalls. Some have flaws and others come out great. Replaced engines with 300-1000 miles on them. Great that they made an effort.

tone def says:

I've had my hyundai santa fe turbo for 2 years and I'm in the middle of getting my third motor.

David Steele says:

The dealership doesn't deny it hyundai the corporation denies it remember we work off commission I wish every blown engine that comes in I could get covered and replaced I'd make over a quarter million a year and the only time we charge diag when it comes to this situation is when kia corporation tells us too. Don't blame the dealership

PlayActionSports says:

you are a lifesaver bro, thanks so much

Millie Perez says:

They only replace the engine not the belt gas casket fuel so basically not the parts??? I spoke to corporate and they say only engine no parts? 800.00 later.

Prashant Maharjan says:

another question, my 2015 Kia Sportage dosen't have a KSDS update, but it is eligible for the recall, will they replace the engine after they are done with the KSDS?

Prashant Maharjan says:

8/25/2023 KIA Sportage 2015, My engine went out about 2 days ago , I booked an appointment for 09/01/2023, which was the latest date available. I called the dealer and had a conversation with a service representative, he told me to bring the car in to the dealer, I used a tow truck to deliver to the dealer(Kia of Milford Service Center CT). There are other four recalls that I came to knew through a call at Kia. I will update if they try to screw me with the engine and will update you if they replace the engine without any issue. Thank you for the video and do help me out if they try to charge me for the recall issue.

n. ll. says:

speezy 1128 says:

I literally just had a issue with my 2016 fully loaded EX i was on the expressway it did a lil shudder and slowed down i couldnt get it past 60 luckily i was about 10miles from a Lia dealership took it str8 in they kept it overnight he claimed it mightve been my knock sensor and then said i had very little oil when i had just got a oil change. So he recommended me to get the oil change and go from there they called me yesterday and said i needed a system update. Wtbs i dont trust it now and ready to get rid of it my car only has 94k on it. It do drive fine now but i dont want to deal with the whole engine replacement. I will never buy another Kia and i was really thinking about getting the Sorrento. The man at the dealership told me the best cars there is the Telluride and Niro

andy mora says:

Just got off the phone with Kia. They said the new engine was covered. But I have to pay for the catalytic converter which is 1600. The website is telling me both the engine and the catalytic converter is covered with no cost to me. The dealership is saying otherwise. Should I lawyer up?

Yasir Saeed says:

I'm in Toronto, Canada. They straight away refused.
