The problem is not the steering column. It’s a lack of an immobilizer system in the keyed models. Hyundai and KIA have come up with a fix by using the alarm's own immobilizer. The update will now immediately immobilize the car when you activate the alarm when using the fob to shut the doors, where as before the alarm had to go off before that would happen.
The thieves know that by gently breaking a window, climbing through the broken window, and removing the steering column covers will not set off the alarm. So you can also say that any alarm system that doesn’t activate when a window is broken is useless.
